Damien,
I rely on Win Patrol to let me know of changes made to my system including
Browser Hijack attempts and scotty has never failed me.

Hello bob3160,

Thanks for your information, WinPatrol then that is what we have to rely on there.

But again I cannot stress enough in the light of the current situation we have at hand with all the vundo type of BHO trojan infections and other trojan dropper infections of that type that it is absolutely vital for those that visit this forum to update to the most recent Sun Java version and delete all previous versions of Sun Java from their machines (via start go to Configuration screen Remove or Alter Programs), because vundo installs through a hole in older Sun Java versions, even if they are there together with more recent versions of this software. Also it is vital for XP users to install Service Pack2 if they have not have done so. Protect against vundo because it is a miser of a spyware trojan infection, which is a great pain in the neck when it has landed on your machine(s),

I'm already running SP3 for Windows XP :) More information available at: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=19387.msg270733#msg270733

Hi bob3150,

I knew you would venture out further than others dare to go 8)

Damian

BHR 4.5.0.471 Supports Internet Explorer, Avant Browser
and all other IE Flavours.

I’m a Vista user and I can’t find my Sun Java folder or any trace of that program. What does it mean? ???

Try using hijackthis as it should report the location of JAVA and what version you are using, if it is installed. It isn’t installed by default as it isn’t Microsoft, but Sun JAVA, you have to install it.

Hi, Bob! A friend pointed out this thread knowing I am a fan of WinPatrol. Little did the friend expect my response, “Hey! I know Bob from SNF.” The friend then explained that you have been a long-time avast! supporter.

I hope you all don’t mind my jumping in here as I have been using WinPatrol for many years and can perhaps add a bit of help.

I'm a Vista user and I can't find my Sun Java folder or any trace of that program. What does it mean?
Hi, gdiloren, as DavidR indicated, SunJava isn't installed by default so unless you installed it yourself, it is not likely on your Windows Vista machine. I've been using Windows Vista about 10 months on this machine and no Java. So far, I haven't missed anything without it, other than the hassle of the huge downloads to replace the vulnerabilities in the previous version(s).

If Java is installed on your computer, you should find it in C:\Program Files\Java. However, you don’t need HijackThis to look for it if you have WinPatrol installed. Just right-click on Scotty in the task bar and click Options. Accept any UAC prompts to allow WinPatrol. From the Options menu, you can select “Spreadsheet Report” or “Hijack Log”.

If you are familiar with HijackThis, you will note that the Hijack Patrol Log is similar, but with additional information available. It is not meant as a replacement for HJT. Note that there are no check boxes for removing anything. However, with WinPatrol, you can remove most undesirables found in the log and more – including Hidden Files, IE Helpers (02 BHo’s), Active Tasks (04’s), Services (023).

It is easy to deal with a nasty service with WinPatrol than HJT because it can be stopped as well as disabled from startup.

Right-click on a file in startup, IE Helpers, Active Tasks and look at the options (among others: check properties, kill, delete on reboot!)

The features are described here: http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

There is just so much in WinPatrol, is it no wonder I am enthusiastic about it?

Hi Corrine,

Welcome to the forums, and thanks for explaining this to us,

polonus

Thank you for the welcome, polonus.

Hi Corrine “from SNF.”
Welcome to the avast! forums.
I hope you’ll grace us more often with your insight and knowledge.

For those that don’t know what SNF is, you’ll find it here.

Thanks, Bob. Actually “SNF” is only one of many sites where I can be found. I’m subscribed to this and the other current WinPatrol topic so will get notice of replies. If you see something you think I can be of assistance with, don’t hesitate to contact me here or at SNF (or one of the 40+ other sites . . . )

The Newsletter was great and I was a happy subscriber for many year but unsubscribed when it went over to just bullet point style short information piece and links to the blog. As a dial-up user who read it off-line I just couldn't be doing with going on-line to read the full item, so sadly I unsubscribed.
Another dial-up user here. I subscribe to the RSS feeds for the blogs that I follow (including Scot's blog). Probably the topic for the general forum, as to what others have found to work best in different scenarios. Seeing you use Firefox, Thunderbird has the option to download news feeds.

Thanks for that, first I have never used any RSS Feeds in the past, couldn’t be bothered to have a news feed reader. I use Firefox but I don’t use Tbird.

I just had a look at the http://blog.scotsnewsletter.com/ page and clicked the little RSS icon in the URL window. Now this I have put in the bookmarks toolbar folder, but to me it still seems to be an extension of the having to go on-line to load the feed manually.

So there doesn’t seem to be any news feed aggregator/reader built into firefox or I’m doing something wrong. So were back at square one without a news aggregator it is the same as having to go on-line to load individual articles and this would be the only reason I would need the aggergator.
