incoming only or resident as well

First of all, thank you all for sharing your knowledge here. Second, I am not a geek, techie, you know <?>. Just a guy with a computer.
I loaded the home/free version. In the main screen I see no tab for scheduling a scan nor updates, etc. I also understand I suposse to see a “virus’s chest”, not here. So, I wonder if my assumption is incorrect or may have a bad install, or Avast does everything invisibly?
I have Norton Utilites installed and Lavasoft’s - Ad-watch/Ad-aware. Run on XP Pro.
After the install, I saw A 2 balls on the sys tray, now there is only one.
What do I need to look for and do? Thank you in advance for sharing!

jp,

You are certainly not a “geek”.

Techie

Norton is not a good thing to have running with Avast since both use resident on-line scanners.
Norton Utillities is not NAV ;)

Eddy,
Thanks…Long day. ;D

But isn’t Norton AV part of Norton System Works, which includes Norton Utilites?

JP,

Do you have Norton AV installed along with Norton Utilities?

Sorry for the delayed response and thank you for your interest reply. Nope I don’t have Norton’s AV installed. Only the hard disk utilities and password manager.

JP

PS: hehe, I mean no ofense stating not being a geek  My friends think I am just because I spend quite of time learning about puters. The fact is I know S**t about it after 20 years of owning one, making my own and fixing them, which proofs, am not one

Funny… Sounds like most of the rest of us. ;D

Let me know which ball is missing in the tray.
There should be the A and the i.
Avast doesn’t do anything really invisibly except the On Access Scanner (Standard Shield).

Almost forgot about your problem. Let’s try a simple repair.

Go into Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove and double click Avast. Choose the option to Repair.

Reboot system and try it again.

We will proceed from there.

Hi Techie101,

thanks for keeping track of my humor and problem. I tried to do what you said, but I don’t see the repair function. I am glad at least there is a “remove” box, so I wonder if that would be the next step.
The only ball at the tray is “a”.
I’ll ck tomorrow for a possible answer. I doubt you’re still helping (sat nite, late?).
BTW I know it is working since I see the ck window going up and down for every file I d/l. Thanks!!!

Hi jps21:
Before you make such a drastic move, why not try RejZoR’s avast! External Control program. RejZoR is another one of our very knowledgable members. You can get his program HERE.
Let us know if that does the trick for you.
