Incomplete Avast Server Edition Installation

Hello,

I recently installed Avast Server Edition but when I try to launch the program the memory scan runs but the program stops opening, (no user interface), and I am unable to access any program functions such as scanning the server. The program seems to have been installed properly and the Avast Icons are in the System tray and it spins occasionally and the database updates. I have tried a repair of Avast from Add/Remove Programs to no effect. For a license key I used the license.dat file that came with our purchase of Avast Standard Suite. What am I missing? Is there anything I can do short of trying to reinstall the program? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
George

I’m not used with the server version, but don’t you have the skinless version of the scanner in your server?
In PCs, the name of the executable is ashSimp2.exe.
Hope it helps.

Is there anything in avast! log?
If you check Task Manager after you try to start the scanner, is the avast! scanner process (aswSimpl, aswEnhcd) running on background invisible, or it’s completely lost?
Do you use any firewall / behavior blocker?

Thanks for the prompt relies,

aswSimpl and aswEncd are not in Task Manager. When I locate aswSimpl.exe in Explorer I am able to launch the interface by clicking on the file. I can start a scan from the interface. Windows firewall is disabled as this is a domain controller. Below are the first few lines from the install log:

The entire log is too lengthy to post in this forum. Is this enough information?

Cheers,

You’ve missed the lines with ‘ERROR’ codes… can you search your log or post at least 100 lines of it? Choose the ones at the bottom of the log file.

Sorry, I didn’t mean the setup log, but rather the “Error” cathegories from avast! Log Viewer (provided the logging sensitivity is high enough).

So, am I right that:

  1. You can start aswAvast.exe - and the memory scan performs correctly (I mean, it “looks” OK).
  2. You can start aswSimpl / aswEnhcd correctly (and the subsequent scans work OK).
  3. aswAvast.exe doesn’t start aswSimpl / aswEnhcd when it’s done with the memory scan.

Below is the contents of the Error Log. I will also post the last 100 lines or so of the Setup log:

There has been a change.

aswAvast.exe now launches aswSimpl.exe and it runs properly, but I cannot launch aswEnhcd.exe from either the simple user interface or by clicking on the executable

Cheers,
George

What exactly do you mean by “cannot launch”?
Does the process appear in the Task Manager?

Thanks
Vlk

By “cannot launch” I mean that when I have the simple user interface open and I click on the enhanced interface the program GUI disappears. Also when I go to aswEnhcd.exe in Windows Explorer and click on it nothing happens. aswEnhcd.exe does not appear in Task Manager.

Cheers,
George

Can you please check the file \data\avast4.ini for the line

HideEnhancedGUI=

Is it present? What value does it have?
Are you using the managed version of avast?

Thanks
Vlk

Vlk, there are a lot of items in this section of avast4.ini file that I don’t know the concept to describe it…
Can you help me to fill these info?

Vlk,

HideSimpleGui=0
HideEnhancedGui=1
HideResidentGui=1

Cheers,
George

That explains it. HideEnhancedGui=1 effectively disables the Enhanced user interface.

Again, I have to ask if you’re using the managed version of avast. If so, check the policies on the AMS.

Cheers
Vlk

Tech, most of the settings are really unofficial/reserved and can change in any build… I don’t think there’s a need to document them (at least for now).

Thanks
Vlk

Thanks anyway. I’ll let the original avast4.ini file as it is… incomplete.

No I am no longer using the managed version, I am having runtime errors with it so I switched. The server does have the AMS installed on it but I am no longer using it. What do you mean by check the policies?

Cheers,
George
