Infected machine, logs attached

Morning folks,

Asked to take a look at one of my parent’s laptops. It was a disaster area with all sorts of crap on it. Cleaned most of it out but 26 infected files remain, and avast is reporting the ‘Access is Denied (5)’ error message when trying to remove them.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Logs attached as replies below.

AdwCleaner log

Malwarebytes log

OTL logs (2 files)

And finally aswMBR log.

How is the computer behaving ?

Hi there Essexboy, thanks for the reply. The machine is definitely running a bit better after the adwCleaner, OTL & aswMBR sweepthrough.

The last Avast scan detected no more virus, however a good few files within Avast folder were showing as path not found (error 3).

I’m running the OTL custom fix with the script as detailed but it seems to have hung on the creating restore point part. Been like that for about 30 mins now.

OK stop OTL if it is still hung

Then let me know of any problems at all

'lo again,

indeed, I stopped OTL and allowed it to reboot. On reboot it looks like OTL finished it’s tasks when logged back in. I manually created a restore point and ran an Avast scan once more which came back empty. Dare I say it, that it might well be sorted.

Stern talking to given to father about the dangers of the internet (my, how things have changed) and told him to read everything and look for tickboxes, don’t open strange things even if it is from people he knows. And most importantly, do not ignore the wee pop up that says Avast is out of date and needs to re-register (this expired 2012 it seems…) !

Definitely needs the software updater on this one

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
When it pops up at the first prompt select OK after it has done some calculations the tabs will appear
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

Hi Essexboy,

That’s their laptop been running for nigh-24 hours and I’m getting reports of it being a vast improvement.

Have ran the OTL cleanup and disc cleanup > more options as suggested. Looks like all is well in the world again.

Thanks once more for the valuable assistance o/

My pleasure, the majority was toolbar rubbish…
