Infected or not?

Hi,

I run Avira FreeAV and Zonealarm and had no real problems showing except for my 16Mbit internet line being really slow at times in the last couple of months). Still I wanted to know for sure and did as told in the “Logs to assist in cleaning malware” thread.

I found some weird stuff with the aswMBR Tool which I cant define + some reg-keys with AMB. Maybe someone can throw an eye at this and tell me whether its serious? Thank you in advance!

Try this and let me know if there is an improvement

Hello Essexboy,

thanks a lot for having a look. I did as you said, skipped the hosts part though since those entries have been added by me. Thats a ton of adware / scareware etc sites that simply loop back to home sweet home.

Attached the log.

Those aswMBR entries that came up red are nothing to worry about?

20:39:02.714 ntoskrnl.exe CLASSPNP.SYS disk.sys >>UNKNOWN [0xfffffa8005c822c0]< \Device\Harddisk1\DR1[0xfffffa8006107060] 20:39:02.719 3 CLASSPNP.SYS[fffff88001b6043f] -> nt!IofCallDriver -> \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP6T0L0-c[0xfffffa8005e5b680] 20:39:02.722 \Driver\atapi[0xfffffa8005da5a90] -> IRP_MJ_CREATE -> 0xfffffa8005c822c0

thanks!

OK lets now check them out, the jobs I removed had the capability of downloading malware

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop *

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hi Essexboy,

did as told, failed at the “save to dekstop”-part though. I completely missed that until it was too late. I executed the file from my downloads folder.

Log attached.

Thank you!

How is the computer behaving now ?

same as before. aswMBR still shows those two red lines.

Sorry, I can’t make much from those logs. Was there an infection - and if yes, has it been removed?

Combofix removed a few strays but the more dangerous files were the jobs removed with OTL

Has the browsing improved any ?

Hi Essexboy,

thanks for the quick reply. As I stated in the first post browsing speeds just dumps from time to tiome, not permanently. Every couple of days or so. Will have to see what happens in the long term.

Those jobs hopefully didnt do anything bad, luckily I have the task-service disabled right after I set up the machine. XP-Antispy does the trick there …

So you think I can live with those red lines in aswMBR? I have got a ton (literally) of server-passwords on this machine (they are encrypted in a password-safe-file but I open that file every day for work), would be bad if they got comprimised. Think I should flush the system and rebuild it from scratch and reset my passwords?

As a matter of prudence I would change the passwords, but as the jobs were never run they were unable to do anything. So I do not feel your system was compromised, locked and hooked files are quite normal for some systems - dependant on the security tools used

Thank you very very much for your time, help and advice!

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
