install as root

Hi all,

today I decided to install avast! mobile security to see how it works.

I like it and would like to install it as root but cannot.

I tried uninstalling and installing 3 times without being root

The only thing that I can do is permit it to erase all data but cannot do anything root

The phone is (samsung) Google Nexus S with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3

Thanks
Carlo

Is your device rooted?

No, I have never rooted my device.

is there any way i can proceed with the installation?

thanks

you can either install non-rooted or root your phone

in fact i would like to install it rooted into phone.

for that you need a rooted phone!

therefore, if i o not know how to root my phone i cannot install it under root???

How do I root my phone? ???

Take your model/manufacturer site.
Or Google, for instance, http://www.androidcentral.com/root

Be aware that rooting will generally void your phone’s warranty though.

Question:
I do have avast mobile-security installed, (non-root), and now i have seen that i can unlock my HTC Desire HD.
Do i have to uninstall first?
How do i switch from non-rooted phone and non-root-installation of avast, to rooted phone and rooted installation?

Thanks in advance…

…and maybe one additional question:
where can i find a list of improvements, which i gain from rooting the phone?

HTC will provide unlocked phones, but not sure if DHD will be one of it - just go through some forums, like XDA.

Yes i know, that is why i am asking.
DHD is now on the list of phones, so i can easily unlock my bootloader.

Nevertheless:
I am missing somewhat the information, what exactly the benefit is.
I would unlock only for avast mobile.
I am interested in

  • being sure that GPS can be enabled
  • being sure to keep all avast-functionality, even after wipe (still want to locate)
  • keeping all setting after reset to default
But i can not find a comprehensive list of all benefits. I am finding informations here and there… so that is why i started asking…

hi,

benefits are:

  • GPS auto enable
  • hard reset proof
  • disable USB debugging / force internet access when lost or stolen
  • can not simply be uninstalled

Reinhard

And the drawbacks?

You might brick your device/lose your warranty doing so. Also if any malware would get to the device that wouldn’t be caught for any reason, it might do more damage (the device becomes more open meaning we can do more things but the same applies to all the other applications).

Thanks,

that is the list i was looking for.

Think i will go for it…

Well… i maybe was too enthusiastic when using the official HTC Unlock Bootloader procedure. While walking through that routine was easy, i now found out that i still have S-On.
So i am now stuck at the question from Avast!, if i want to S-OFF or if i want to use Recovery Image.
Seems as S-OFF is not an easy option for me, but i am also unsure what i can do with Recovery Image.

Anybody who can tell me how to work with the Recovery Image way?
