Install avast on an infected computer?

My wife’s laptop has a virus. I’ve downloaded avast to my flash drive from my computer. However, when I try to install it on hers, I get this: “The installer is unable to initialize early avast! self-defense with error 0x0000043c! Aborting!”

I got the same message when I tried to download it from her computer. BTW, I was working in Safe Mode each time.

Could someone please help me? Thanks!
