I am receiving the following message at completion of install of avast home 4.7: “you have upgraded your oper. system. Current install of avast can’t run on this system. need to reinstall.” The avast program does work(I have performed a scan) however the resident scanner feature does not. I have set scanner to standard level but it reverts to disabled when I close the avast program(I assume the scanner is supposed to operate in background at all times). I have Windows xp w/ service pack 2(it has not been recently changed). I have followed
steps in faq re: hidden icons in system tray, used repair avast function in control panel, have used avast uninstall utility to remove and reinstall avast(also used Norton utility 1st to assure removal of prior AV protection) Help!!
Did you change your file system from FAT32 to NTFS?
Are you using avast Home or Professional?
When did you install it for the first time?
I’m using Avast Home. I loaded it a few days ago and had this issue. Checked FAQ’s and 1st tried Norton uninstall utility. I actually ran the Avast uninstall utilty and reinstalled avast today. My c drive is already ntfs.
Can you try again (sorry…)?
- Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
- Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
- Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
No luck, same message appears. I was very careful to follow the instructions in order. Any thoughts?
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Ok here goes… If I mess this up, forgive and send me a how to…

I have the very same problem!
This is driving me crazy! I left mcafee because of this kind of thing.
Vista home. IE7
had Mcafee installed.
Complained to brother who suggested you.
registered.
downloaded avast home.
I uninstalled mcafee.
installed avast.
the first 3 times a black dos like box flashed on the screen and then nothing.
I did it again and the installation started.
when it rebooted, I got an error message that avast cannot run on this system and I have to reinstall.
I did.
and again.
Then I came here and saw I needed MCPR.
so I got that and uninstalled avast, ran the MCPR and rebooted and reinstalled.
Same message.
It does all the opening screens and runs a boot scan, but no icon and no resident protection. as far as I know I have no vrius shield.
I am ANGRY.
Why does this have to be so complicated?
The first time I ran the program successfully, I had a log warning that set something failed. This is gone now.
I have a very bad cold.
I have no log messages.
I have no blue ball.
I have no protectiion and my husband has been online all night.

What is MCPR?
http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/MCPR
This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=71525
Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).
I will try that now.
Post back the results ![]()
It did not work.
The actual message is-
“you have upgraded your operating system. Current installation of avast
cannot run on this operating system. The avast system needs to be
reinstalled.”
Now what?
my version nthat I downloaded is 4.7 but the Knowledge base says I need 4.7.9 something.
What did you do, exactly?
The actual version is 4.7.1098.
Well, I read your post.
I downloaded the file to uninstall avast.
I went offline.
I ran the program.
Reboot
I ran the MCPR file.
Reboot
I ran the avast install file.
Reboot
Got the same results. It installs. Asks if I want to schedule a boot scan.
I say no - as it has done one 4 times now. and then my desktop is there with the avast icon - but no blue ball in the sys tray.
Had lunch.
Took my cold meds.
Came back here.
Where is this most recent version of avast? How come I don’t get that in a download?

How to
avast! and Windows Vista
Solution
avast! runs perfectly on Windows Vista, but there are currently two requirements:
- avast! must be version 4.7.942 or newer.
- avast! must be uninstalled prior to upgrade of operating system.
should I try that? or just go get some other program?
Bought this machine in oct. at Best Buy. Very happy with it. Hate Vista.
Acer Aspire 4400+
Vista and IE7
I THINK that the machine had Norton on it originally. I THINK I used the Norton clean uninstall before McAfee. Maybe that was in another life, brother.
I got rid of McAfee because I could not figure out how to change my home page/disable Mcafee’s homepage protection. I spent WEEKS looking for that answer. No response from M other than go to Tools…
What do I do now?
Thank you for being there.
Thank you for answering my questions.
There is nothing like a pc problem to make you feel completley inadequate.
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
- Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
- Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
I downloaded the remove Nav and then looked in programs for Symantec or Nav. Neither shows up there.
I tried to run the program anyway but it asks what I want to remove and I don’t remember what it was called. I do remember using the clean up files that come with Mcafee. Wouldn’t that have removed them?
I just ran the repair tool in programs and clicked on the icon on the desktop. The silver box opens and agin it’s disabled.
BUT I can click on the buttons. It has downloaded something and now I have a 2 messages in the warning log.
1/11/08 8:21:40 appl=3160 Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return Code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.

Does this help?
