Forced to unistall v5 because it wouldnt update. No install of v6 is failing. Please see attachment. Anyone help?
Can I ask what is your reason to use v5 instead of v6?
Also, I see you have Win XP Service Pack 2 - you really should update to Service Pack 3 as soon as possible.
I believe the problem looks like it’s caused by the files on the Avast 5 update server - either your computer can’t get a proper connection to download the update files, or they are invalid on Avast’s end. But really you should use version 6 now…

You need to update to SP3 first, then upgrade Avast 6.0.1125.
You should also check with Secunia PSI http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ to make sure you do not have other outdated software, since software changes so frequently. This site gives you the vendor’s directly link should you need to patch any software making it easy for you to fix. Most of us here scan out systems weekly.
You can also keep an eye on the Avast Support forum under “Updates” for the latest news on software updates as well.
Also try the uninstall page for instructions on fully removing avast, which could aid you in re-install.
