Install freeze - stuck

While updating to v5 from 4.8 my computer froze and rebooted itself.
I was able to remove v5, but some (all?) of v4.8 remains on the computer.
However it doesn’t quite work. Icon on bottom does not come up. None of the services can be started in Service manager. In Add Remove Programs, clicking Change Remove is unresponsive. This is true before and after reinstalling v4.8. Try to install v5 and am told I can’t because another program requires a reboot. Several reboots, same result. Somewhere along the line I tried removing all references to alwil or avast from the registry. Some removed, some wouldn’t. Went through all the reinstallation procedures listed above and am at the same point.
Any thoughts??

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 (used it twice: one for 4.8 and another for 5). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Thank you Tech from Brazil. That worked.

I’d found a suggestion for that before but the link to aswclear was for v5, and I wasn’t informed I needed to be in Safe mode.
It all works now. thanks again.

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
