Installation failure home edition. Error 301

I have downloaded the exe file multiple times but it will not install the program. I immediately get an error #301. A year ago I tried the free version until it expired and asked me to pay to renew. I deleted the program at that time. I have requested and received (by email) a registration number.
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

What you’ve downloaded should have worked, but there are quite a few users who are finding similar problems. What seems to usually work is to download the full installer from just below the words “Free registration” on this page (36.99Mb) and then use that to install it.

Do/did you have any other AV installed?
Do you have any signs of malware on the computer, and what is the OS and service pack?
What other security software is installed (including firewall)?

I tried again from the site you recommended. Same result.
No other AV installed
No malware that I know of.
Windows XP, Service pack 3
No security or firewall running or installed
Thanks for your help

Yes, but, what av did you have before you tried to install avast ?

I previously had been running Norton 360 but I removed it from my system. Every week or so I run Ad-Aware and that will not load now either. I get: “Failed to connect to service”

I installed the new version of ad-aware and it runs fine. I disabled Ad-aware realtime protection.
Avast will still not install.
No other AV or security programs running.

Norton is notorious for removal remnants in a normal uninstall.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Sure enough the post by Tarq57 did it! ;D Problem solved Thank you !

That however, might not do it for the original poster who previously had Norton installed as it can be a pig to remove.

Ok, I went to
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
and ran the program and presumably removed the rest of Norton. It sure appeared to be doing something.
The Avast! 4.8 program still refuses to load.
I’m still getting “There was an error while completing the setup process”.
And the screen that flashed briefly just before that indicated a server response 301
I’m wondering if I have a virus that is preventing the Avast! program from installing. ??

Earlier, when you posted that “tried again from the site (I) recommended” in reply2, had you downloaded the full installer file, 36.99Mb, titled “…setupeng.exe”, or just clicked on the Cnet download button?

If you haven’t already, try downloading and installing from the file I recommend.
There have been a lot of posts with install problems recently, most seem related to the Cnet install link.
Don’t know why.
