I am so technically inept that I restrict my efforts to putting up a picture hook. I run XP2000 and had to renew my expired avast! firewall. It’s the Home version since I really just use the PC as an electric typewriter. On the email instructions to authorise the new access code, I got to the bit where it says “click on the blue ball at the bottom right corner”. Sadly this has disappeared so I cannot activate the programme. Does anyone know how to get the blue ball back or should I call in the friendly geek who must think of me as his pension fund?
Any help that a simpleton can implement would be gratefully acknowledged.
I hate to disappoint but avast doesn’t have a firewall element, it is an anti-virus. Though there is a firewall in development.
The blue ball shouldn’t go because the home version has expired, so you have other issues.
avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.
What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?
Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.
Like Lydget I, too, am totally inept at this bloody computery-thing.
I downloaded avast! successfully, restarted my computer, registered with the website, got my Activation Code e-mail, and then my problems started…
There is NO ‘blue ball’ at the bottom of my screen, and I cannot contact avast!, despite registering for their Support Desk (the link just gives me a blank screen).
What should I do now in order to use the Activation Code and start using the software, please?
If you can answer the question about other security software, I asked.
Have you tried to follow the step to recovering the avast icon ?
Also try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
I closed the laptop down and when I reopened it, there was a desktop icon (but not the one on the bottom right). I clicked on the desktop icon and Lo! it all started to happen as it should! I entered the Registration Key and everything is fine now - the icons have even appeared on the bottom right of the screen, so now all’s right with the world!!!
I’m sorry if I posted unnecessarily, but it’s difficult for us non-computer people (like Lydget as well, I guess) to ‘work round’ what are often just small hiccups.
