Installation problem

Hi, I just tried to install the Avast antivirus software (the free version). But when I ran the installer, everything works, except at the end I get the message “There was an error completing the setup process”. I did select to run as administrator just in case.

I recently used the uninstaller too because an old version was refusing to update, being constantly on the “initializing” phase.

This is the contents of the “view setup log”, if it helps at all.

Is there anything I can do? I really don’t like being without protection online.

is any previous used AV fully removed?

General: Uninstalling a third-party antivirus software http://www.avast.com/en-gb/faq.php?article=AVKB11

As far as I know, there has been no other antivirus programs on this machine in the past, and I’m pretty sure the old avast was uninstalled as I can’t find it in the list of installed programs.

If it’s any help I’m using Windows 7 and the laptop is, according to the sticker, an “E-SYSTEM Sorrento 1”.

But I don’t know if that’s very relevant information. I’m usually pretty good with a computer, but I am, as some might say, somewhat stumped by this problem.

OK, managed to get it installed, but now OTHER problems are occurring. See images for details.

I haven’t rebooted yet, do I need to do that for it to work or not?

EDIT: A reboot hasn’t done anything. The problem is still there. Any advice?

check avast settings / update … try direct connection, no proxy

try avast repair
controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall > repair option …wait a minute and reboot

any change?

if no success download update here

avast! VPS update: http://www.avast.com/download-update

any change?

The first two solutions were unsuccessful.

The third solution was… well it doesn’t seem to have made any change at all. Avast still looks exactly the same. Still can’t turn it on, still shows “unknown” as the current version and release date, still says connection not established.

Also, my original installation of Avast was from a disk (which I no longer have), and someone else did it for me so I don’t know exactly what they did, would this have any effect at all?

Oh, and here’s another thing added to the list of things that probably shouldn’t be happening. It’s somehow telling me it’s both registered and not registered simultaneously.

go her http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 scroll down to OTL, follow instructions and attach (not copy and paste) diagnostic log

then Essexboy will have a look when he arrive later today

Where would I post the diagnostic log once it’s done? Would I just post it in that thread? Create my own? Post it in this one we’re in now?

I know those questions make me sound a bit… dense. But at least I’m asking before I do something wrong.

Edit: Actually I’ll just stick them here. If they’re in the wrong place then please redirect me.

perfect ;)

essexboy is notified and should be here in a couple of hours

Thank you for the help. I suppose all I can do now is wait.

Hi the screenshot indicates that you have not registered and the trial has expired. Could you register Avast and see if that cures it

I tried. Got this message: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.

OK lets do a full uninstall and re-install. You will need to register Avast

Download Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

[]Run aswClear
[
]It will offer to reboot to safe mode … no need to do that

[*]In the Select Product to Uninstall dropdown choose the version of Avast that is on your system.
[*]Press Uninstall
[*]Once complete reboot your system to Normal Mode
[*]Reinstall Avast

Followed your instructions.

Avast installed successfully - and the setup process told me I have 30 days of free protection too.

A “startup scan” began running soon after, something that wasn’t happening before.

I have a feeling this is a sign that the installation FINALLY was a success. [update: It WAS a success. Everything’s in working order]

While typing this, the startup scan completed. No threats found.

Thank you SO MUCH for your help, both of you. This thread may be closed now. But if I have further problems, or any questions, I won’t hesitate to ask.

Edit: Registered Avast soon after as well. Now I have a whole YEAR.

;D

Glad it worked. Run OTL and press cleanup to remove it
