I have removed all previous installations of the Avast! free but I cannot re-install Avast! The setup program just sits at “File Shield” above the status bar.

I am using Windows 7. No, there isn’t an Avast! program listed under Programs and Features in Control Panel.
What version and number of avast are you trying to install? the latest is 8.0.1489.
