Installed Avast 4 Home and now computer will not boot.

I put Avast Antivirus on to my daughters computer, all went okay it did a scan of the system found a couple of items and then rebooted. On the start up there was a message as follows:-
Disk Boot Failure Insert System Disk & Press Enter.

I checked the BIOS and everything was okay, but I could not get past this message to get windows to load.
I also tried to carry out an XP Repair Install but I could only get as far as this message:-
Setup is inspecting you computers hardware configuration and before it would hang and not carry on with the install.

Any ideas?

I also tried a Maxtor 6L040J2 40GB 7200 hard drive on which I carried out a low level format to get it back to its RAW state but again I could not load Windows XP Home SP2 onto it as it stopped at Setup is inspecting you computers hardware configuration the same as the Seagate hard drive.

The drives are recognized in the bios and were set as the first boot drive, and I even installed new cables but no joy.

Can anyone help.

You seem to have a second antivirus - installed or bad uninstalled - in this computer…

The computer did have Norton Anti Virus on it, but this was removed with the Norton Removal Tool prior to installing Avast 4 Home. I put Avast on to my Sons computer a few days before and again removed Norton Anti Virus and there have been no problems.
If for some reason this had been caused by a bad uninstall, why would it effect the clean Maxtor drive that I tried to carry out a new install of XP on.

Sorry, I’ve missed that… it was the symptoms of a second antivirus, specially NAV.
Are you using any other security program there?

No only NAV, I have even tried changing the memory on the board but it made no difference. I also tried to install windows XP using the set of 6 floppy disks but it got to the Setup is inspecting you computers hardware configuration and stopped as did the CD.

Something make me think it’s a hardware problem… If even the Recovery Console from the floppies can’t be loaded, well, something is very bad in the computer… But I can’t see why just installing avast could make this… I never experienced this problem before… not even here in forums…

Yes I agree, I am currently speaking to MSI Technical Support as I only brought the motherboard in June 2006. At the moment they are going along the route of the HDD being the problem, but I explained to the them that the Maxtor HDD that I tried to load a fresh install of XP onto and it hung at Setup is inspecting you computers hardware configuration. I then took out and connected it to a MSI K8T Neo board, and XP installed without a problem. I am awaiting their reply.
