Installed avast and now I'm a lost!

Hey everyone. wonder if anybody can put a finger on my avast problem. I installed avast on my xp operating computer and it seemed to work for a day or until I next turned on the pc. I did a full scan ; it uncovered some infected files on my auxilary drive but when I turned it on the next day It had this message 'Unsecured" System is not Protected" ; clicked “Fix” and nothing. Also system is stopped, and Start program does nothing. I have version 5.1.864 which I thought was the latest, but have seen other versions,I Use Aol dial-up and not too savvy about proxy settings . Tried a few things but to no avail. Help is appreciated to get this Avast working again …before the inevitable…removal maybe reinstall but that took forever with Aol.

You can try just upgrading to 5.1.889 or an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Welcome to the forums, raybuick

Also, what av were you using before avast and how did you remove it?

 Thanks for your suggestions Tech and Avast forum. I read and read and tried a few things like you mentioned but nothing worked. I finally uninstalled it and am installing McAfee AV, Spam, Spyware Program that is Free with Aol users as I type.
-tried in Safe mode
-tried updating to newest version
-tried as in one post: unchecking ‘behavior shield’ but somehow always reverted back to checked when ok’d.
-tried turning off Aol firewall
I will try Avast again on a different Pc in the future with a genuine operating system, which in fact could be the culprit on this Pc. Otherwise it runs fine. I reformatted this used Pc and cannot remember if it had another Av program on it. Thanks Again for all help…raydayyy

I really doubt this could be the culprit.
Anyway, sorry to not being able to solve your problem. Good luck with McAfee and see you round.

Until the fix is available, Un-install the behavioral shield. Disabling it isn’t enough.

how do you uninstall the behavior shield, please?

  • Behaviour Shield Uninstall
From windows Add Remove Programs, Change/Remove, select Change and uncheck the Behaviour Shield option, click Next and OK your way out, reboot and that should allow you to use the. See image, whilst this is for XP the process is the same for other OSes.

THANK YOU,uninstalling the behavior shield looks to be a good work around.

Control Panel > Programs > avast > Remove > Change

You’re welcome.

Yes, a good workaround and one that is easy to reverse when the problem is resolved.

 BACK IN BLACK!! oKAY, I installed avast 5.1.889 on another Pc and it has been working flawlessly for a few days now. Seems to work good, without any hangups or slowing down the Pc. I like it better them mcAfee, so time will tell who’ll win in the longrun. Thanks Again for All suggestions
