Installed Avast, my documents folder deleted.

So i installed Avast, and shortly after all the files and folders in My documents were wiped out, i now have a new, empty my documents folder. WTF?!!?

this is the second time I’ve used avast on this laptop, didn’t have this problem before. on this occasion i had uninstalled Norton the day before, which was part of the factory set up [ the laptop had been sent in 4 months ago and was completely reformatted then ] - Norton subscription had lapsed and was giving me grief, and caused a crash so i got rid of it, the next day i put in avast. Didn’t notice anything odd at first, and going by the staggered creation dated for the new my pictures and my music folders it didn’t happen all at once, took a l few hours. Any ideas? Any chance of recovering the files? Included some stuff i kind of need…

avast (free) version can’t automatically manage virus or infected files.

If you did not command it to do, it won’t even touch that files.
We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • How did you uninstall Norton? Only with Control Panel?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • In XP/Vista, is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?
