I have been using Thunderbird for a while now and everything was working fine. I have recently installed Avast! home edition and now Thunderbird can not launch or check e-mails. As a matter of fact, I can not launch programs like Yahoo! Messenger and Excel from my desktop (double click the icons). Any idea on what is going on? I am using Win XP SP2, Firefox, and Thunderbird.
I did not change any settings in Avast!. I have not tried the unistall routine but can try it tonight.
I am not running anyother antivirus software - uninstalled Norton Internet Security before installing Avast!. So far, I’ve noticed the following:
(1) Thunderbird will not launch completely. Screen stays grayed out. No graphics.
(2) Yahoo! Messenger will not launch at all. Hour glass will spin but eventually stops without launching.
(3) I use Open Office which is an open source mimic of Microsoft Office. None of those applications will launch either.
I did briefly disable Avast! and tried launching some of the above but without success. Is there a filter in Advast! that is blocking these applications?
Norton (if installed as part of the NIS suite) is a real pain in the rear to get rid of, as many posts in these forums attest to, even after an uninstall.
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs: Removing your Norton program using SymNRT, download and run the utility and reboot. Then do the Uninstall Install routine Tech mentioned.
