Hi, welcome to the forum.
What was the AV installed prior to Avast, and how did you remove that?
Any other security software installed?
Any indication of malware activity on this computer before installing Avast?
Are you sure there is no third party firewall installed?

Sounds like firewall blocking on a new application. If so you should have your firewall inform you of any blocking it does or ask if it is OK.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

i got some antivirus program that was called personal antivirus i removed it with malwarebytes and i am sure i got it all out the firewall is the winxp firewall it let the avast install ok but never asked to let it get the updates outher then that this laptop dosent have any antivirus program or outher firewall installed on it sorry so long to reply didnt no i got a responce to my question

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
  6. Check and post the results.
