Installed Free AVAST 1367 - now internet and emaiil connections do not work

Have used free version of AVAST for a long time (maybe 5 years?). It has worked faultlessly.

Yesterday I installed 1367 on my XP system, but did not reboot. All was fine. When I rebooted today I could not connect to internet or email servers. After many hours speaking with broadband provider and re-installing modem and router, with no success (thinking it was a broadband connection problem) I disabled AVAST shields. All connections worked immediately. As soon as I re-enable shields, the connections fail. Very frustrated. Any ideas? - can I go back to previous version of AVAST? or will I have to ditch AVAST and find another product that works.
Thanks!

do you have a firewall ?

Hi. Yes I have Zonealarm 9.2.106. Since I posted my original query I saw the post about removing all AVAST entries in the Zonealarm programs list. There were many of them - maybe 50 - I deleted them all thinking this might fix it, but I still have the problem.

not sure if it makes any difference…delete all rules and reboot

OK I’ll do that.
What I have discovered is that after I deleted all Zonealarm rules for AVAST, the first time I started my web browser (Chrome) Zonealarm asked me whether to allow AVAST. I answered “yes” and ticked the “remember this” box. I then found I could stop and restart the web browser and it would always open my home page (Google), but when I tried to click on other bookmarks, some would work OK but others would not. I did this several times and it was always the same ones which worked and the same ones which did not. All this was with all 8 AVAST shields running.

Anyway, I will delete all zonealarm rules and reboot, and will then post an update.
Thanks for your help!

if that does not work i would uninstall zonealarm and reboot, if that does it…then you know where the problem is

OK - So I deleted all Zonealarm program definitions except those for “system” programs. Then rebooted. Almost immediately after the reboot, Zonealarm asked if AVAST could access the internet, I said “yes” and “remember”. After that I started the web browser and all seemed OK. Also email connection worked OK. All a bit slow, but then AVAST told me it had just updated virus definitions. After that browser was faster - seemed to be back to normal.

So it looks like this fixed the problem. (Though I don’t understand why - I wonder what was special about this AVAST relase?)

However many thanks for your brilliant help ! Hopefully you won’t hear from me again!
Happy Christmas!

It is not the first time Zonealarm or Comodo have created problems with avast…

Have a nice christmas
