I am trying to install 4.8 (not ready for 5.x yet) on my HP desktop running XP. I am trying to load it from a USB thumb drive. The problem is that I don’t have Internet access yet from my wireless Lan on the HP… stilll working on the wireless setup.
However, when I try the install Avast tells me I don’t have a Internet connection! I want to install Avast before I set up the wireless system on my HP … Long Story
I figure Avast probably wants to run a update first.
Is there any work-around I can use to get Avast installed on my HP???
Any help or advice is much appreciated ;D
You will activate your avast installation, and allow updating, after the first time you connect to the Internet.
So, like alghorabaaa said, you can install avast without Internet connection.
Thank you. So if I understand this correctly … Avast is now partially installed and will complete and update the installation when connected to the Internet. Therefore, I will not really be able to scan my HP system HDD at all right now … prior to having Internet connectivity?
Correct?
No, Avast! is fully installed, but needs an internet connection to update with the latest virus definitions. But you can also download them manually from here :
One thing to check first, is the file size of the installer you are using on that USB drive.
If it’s around 300kb, it won’t work. That’s the universal installation file, that requires a connection to download the rest of the program.
If it’s around 40Mb, the above answers apply, and you’re good to go.
Im baaaack. Thanks for all the help guys. Here’s my current situation.

My installer file is almost 36 Mb … so I should be okay

Put it on your USB thumbdrive, and so update your system with no internet connection Smiley
I downloaded the update file to my thumb-drive … all went well BUT I did not yet try to run the update BECAUSE Avast
does NOT have a desktop Icon
does NOT show in other programs list[
does NOT show under add/remove programs list/b]
Is Avast really installed on my laptop now WITHOUT it showing up in items 1~3 ?
Sounds dodge.
Check in taskmanager, there should be some services running starting with “Ash…”
What previous Av was installed?
Did you install it as an admin?
Hi Tarq57 …you said: Sounds dodge I’m guessing you mean it’s like being in stealth mode in my HP? (shrugs)
Check in taskmanager, there should be some services running starting with “Ash…” Unfortunately on my WIN XP task manager it does not show a services tab like it does on my Vista OS laptop.
What previous Av was installed?None. I previously had Norton AV which I have completely uninstalled using Nortons own removal tool.
Did you install it as an admin?Yes I did
Here is some additional info which may hopefully help you to help me:
I searched my HP using the term Avast and found the following results:
1] AVAST_HOME_SETUP.EXE-17A43346.pf in Folder: C:\WINDOWS \Prefetch
2] AVAST_HOME_SETUP.EXE- 1F0E2CEA.pf in Folder: C:\WINDOWS \Prefetch
I am not quite sure what items 1 and 2 mean other than Avast is waiting for some type of execution of these exe files?
I am sorry I am not more knowledgeable on this …but I am trying my best to learn.
Once again I truly appreciate all your help and valuable time
Hi Rich.
By “sounds dodge” I mean “dodgy…suspicious…not quite right.” Sorry for the confusion.
In taskmanager (XP) select “processes” then click on the Image name header to alpha-beta-cize them. See the picture. That’s (more or less) what it should look like.
I might have put you wrong by mentioning “services” when the term is “processes”. (Though they run as services.)
I think your Avast has not installed correctly. Where did you get it from?
I suggest a full re-install.
Download the Avast Uninstall utility from here (get the second one.)
Download a new full setup file. There’s one available at Avast or File Hippo.
Disconnect from the net. (If applicable)
Uninstall Avast (if applicable/able.)
Run the uninstall utility. This may need to be done in safe mode.
Reboot.
Run the new downloaded installer file. Follow the prompts. Skip “check for updates” or “boot scan” if those options are presented.

I d/l it from CNET downloads.com I will do a full re-install after I run the Avast uninstall utility.
It may take me a day or so to get back here. Please hang in there with me Tarq, I will report back here either way!
Sure thing. I’m reasonably confident this will work, if there’s nothing else at play.
“Nothing else” would be most likely some kind of malware that prevents security programs from installing/running.
That word “alpha-beta-cized” had me bamboozled!
It took me a full 45 seconds to comprehend its meaning!
I propose the word to be read as “alphabetically”. What say?
Sorry for the delay in getting back here but I have run into major troubles My wife tried to run Avast’s removal tool for ver 4.8 and it did not work Unfortunately she did not run it in the SAFE MODE.
Then she removed:
1] AVAST_HOME_SETUP.EXE-17A43346.pf in Folder: C:\WINDOWS \Prefetch
2] AVAST_HOME_SETUP.EXE- 1F0E2CEA.pf in Folder: C:\WINDOWS \Prefetch
and instead of leaving them in the Recycle Bin … she emptied the Recycle Bin !!!
Now my XP OS still boots and I get to the Desktop but it won’t run ANY of my programs !!!
I tried running MBAM (Malwarebytes) but it won’t run either. She tried the Restore option on XP and it seemed to have restored at first BUT I am still unable to run any of my programs.
I have never reinstalled an OS but I am thinking that may be my only option at this point (hoping NOT!)
HP did not provide me with a bootable disk on my 4 year old HP … so right now I am not sure what to do :
Any help/advice will really be greatly appreciated
Thank you,
The tool only needs to be run in safe mode if Avast doesn’t uninstall cleanly via add/remove programs.
Deleting prefetch files would do no harm. (So you can’t blame your wife. Sorry. ;))
That said nothing should really be deleted unless the user knows what it’s for. Is it possible anything else was deleted?
This is starting to possibly sound more like a malware issue, or maybe a registry issue…I don’t really know.
If no programs will run on it your options become a bit limited. Sorry, I have no experience with re-installing an OS on a HP machine without a disk. If you can borrow an XP Home installation disk, a repair install might be possible.
One thing I’d look at doing - if no-one else posts with more informed ideas - is to try a BART disk. This would need to be downloaded and burned using a clean and working computer.
Below are links to a couple. Avira (Direct Download),
DrWeb (also have a look at the “how it works” link on that page)
Thanks again Tarq for your quick reply and links. I will try to get my laptop up and running again …possibly doing an OS repair or reinstall and will report back on this thread when I am hopefully up and running. It may take several days to get back here again…but I WILL !
