Installing in Vista

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition on my Acer laptop with an Intel Centrino Duo 1.6GHz Processor, and 1GB of RAM.

I have downloaded Avast Professional 4.7.942 and tried to install it. An error message popped up twice during installation saying “Installation failed”, but completed anyway, and asked me to reboot. I did, and when computer restarted, I had the red circle over the Avast icon in the system tray.

When I clicked on the Avast icon, it popped up another error message saying “avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.”. I have searched the FAQ and found a suggestion, but it only works for XP, not for Vista. I tried it anyway to see if it would do anything, and the Avast Antivirus service was not started.

When I selected start, it came up with an error message saying “Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.”

I do not have any other anti-virus software installed on my computer. I have tried uninstalling, redownloading and reinstalling Avast, but I get the same errors.

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. I have been using Avast for some years when I had XP Professional, and never had any problems with it. Thank you

  1. Are you running the English version of Vista?
  2. Did you use the default installation folder (offered by the setup program) or did you make any changes to it?

Thanks
Vlk

Yes, it’s the English version. I left all the default options as they were

This “the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error” and the accompanying Red Circle can also be an indication of the presence of another AV or remnants.

Did you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

If you open the properties of the “avast! Antivirus” service, what does the page “Dependencies” show?

Also, can you please confirm the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswMonFlt exists?

Thanks
Vlk

To DavidR: avast is the first AV program i have attempted to install on Vista, there has been no previous AV program.

To Vlk: The properties page of the avast! Antivirus service looks like the attached screenshot. I have been into start/run/regedit, and as far as I can tell, the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswMonFlt does not exist.

I have looked in the setup log for avast; I’m not entirely sure whats going on, but this bit looks wrong:

I’ve attached the entire log file, see if it helps or not.
