You don’t have to install Chrome, once you install and reboot there will be a popup screen asking if you want Chrome installed - if you don’t want it then untick the box.
Hi There, don’t be angry,
if you don’t want to install the chrome, just uncheck the thickbox…
Here is another very angry user. >:( Putting an action on someone who doesn’t ask for it is very client unfriendly!!!
As this board has seen so many discussions on this issue I am absolutely sure the executives of this company are fully aware that there are problems associated with the opt-out feature of the browser installation attached to the Avast product, and now, Google Drive.
But the present business model is heavily dependent on Mr. Page, so the Avast company executives are hardly likely to shoot that goose. I don’t know if it’s a golden goose, but it is helping them financially, obviously. But the engineers have to be very, very careful that they don’t slip up and cause the opt-out to disappear, or malfunction.
I didn’t have a choice either. The page with the opt-out boxes appeared for about a half-second and then went away while Chrome and the toolbar were installed. I simple wasn’t fast enough to keep it from happening.
I had to wait until it was installed, changed over my default browser from Firefox, and messed with my start page before I could remove it.

I’m angry too!
My mom knows nothing about Google Chrome that auto downloaded so I had to do MORE work and uninstall what SHOULD NOT have been an auto download.
Stick to your job as an Antivirus and only download updates and engines…as it is Avast Free thinks it’s an updater for ALL software other than it’s own antivirus.
Thank god I left Avast for my computer but I still have to put up with this crap on my mothers computer.
Hi this is ridiculous. In this day and age any of you installing software and can’t choose custom install and I mean any software, or you can’t read what is in front of you it is time to pay a shop to update your programs. This is just sad and dont tell me there is not a spot to uncheck chrome also to only install the parts you want as I install avast free on many systems with never getting chrome or the software updater because I do a Custom install.
Hang on a moment, Hammey. I most certainly DID NOT get the chance to unselect the check boxes for Chrome and Default browser. The page appeared and a half-second later it went away and the installer started. There was NO decision on my part to accept the option.
I’ve been in the software/computer business since 1964 and I do agree that most installers will at least pause for a decision. The Avast installer did NOT wait.
Bill
Then what you experienced is certainly not the norm as you should have got the dialogue window when you rebooted after the update.
Now there are thoughts that when the dialogue is there it has focus for it is possible to accidentally click enter or another key if you don’t see/notice the dialogue (though it is large). But if you are like me you will be watching the keyboard when you type, so that is entirely possible to miss it.
Hi Hiballer then that is very strange in all the times I have installed free avast it always stayed at that spot until I clicked finish maybe you got a messed up download. I do agree now days you really need to watch what is going on and read what comes up or some of these unwanted programs may be installed. Now free avast does cost a company money they retrive a bit back by including other programs in the install but we always get the choice to install or not. For me I am glad they can make a few $ and still provide a good av solution.
Except for this single update re-install I’ve also had the option page stop and wait for a response. I take great care in doing this because the Flash and Adobe installers will stick toolbars onto your browser if you aren’t careful. In this instance, I did NOT touch the keyboard or mouse in anticipation of unchecking the boxes. The dialog presentation was as pictured in the post above but it did not pause as expected and went right ahead and installed Chrome.
I’ve attached the install.log (parsed to just the entries for 26/27 may) to this post. perhaps someone can analyze them and find out why the installer did not pause. I did notice one entry that was curious though:
08:19:05 min/sys Offer GUI DLL not loaded but “installOffer” function executed.
08:19:05 vrb/gen Offer installed, 0xFFFFFFFF

Some of these so-called helpers need to comprehend what is being said!
Some say Chrome installed itself either after an update at it’s own accord or otherwise… For Gods sake will you guy’s listen to what is being said - it happened to me there was NO OPTION get it, how much clearer must you have it explained, do you really have cloth ears or what?
Stop fanning the fire and accept what is being said!
Avast has no intentions of stopping this ‘piggy backing’ it makes them money, either put up with it or do what I did put Avast on a standby drive whilst using something else, either it gets sorted before my expiry date or goodbye Avast!
Even using their removal tool left files and folders around, I went through bit by bit for Alwil and Avast folders… including Avast, Alwil & Google entries in the registry yet doing a clean install - Chrome installed with no option - understand, no option?
I recloned the hard drive installed Avast… lo and behold I had the Chrome option box. Now what file caused that uh, you are the experts aren’t you?
People on here needs to accept what is being said, not everyone wants Chrome… and Avast shouldn’t be piggy backing’!
And it does install without ones knowledge whether you all like it or not, so please stop saying it doesn’t!
Dave
That looks like proof to me! Now I’m sure someone will say it’s not proof, and explain why.
Here is another interesting entry: Attachment
It can’t be said that you had the Chrome Browser installed.
Could I just repeat-:
I had this very problem, certainly no boxes to untick and got Chrome, I got chrome after an update… no options I surely don’t need to repeat that OK?
I used uninstall tool to remove Avast I scoured all the files relating to Avast, Alwill … and Google deleting them and then I went through the registry doing the same…
you’d think that would do it wouldn’t you - wrong upon a reinstall I got that blasted Chrome, soooo I reformatted and then re cloned the hard drive from a clean copy… installing Avast again, yippee I got the option box.
But lets not get too excited servers can have bugs as well uh?
Now, if I had any time I would try to find what files that ‘so-called’ uninstaller missed - yes it left plenty of cleaning up to do - why did it take a clean wipe of the drive, gotta be a file, a bug that’s causing this problem.
Why the heck are these guys on here still saying we missed this n’ that, should have unticked this or that - can they NOT read what is being said, are we more simpler than them?
At least I know and many others know when they say there were NO BOXES to tick there really WAS no boxes to tick, is it really that difficult to get into your heads just how many more times do you ALL need to be told there really was no option given?
Isn’t it about time this matter was resolved once and for all, Avast should not be piggybacking other folks crap, what else is being installed behind closed doors?
Avast must be on top of the premier league with number BSOD’s and they’er pushing Google Chrome, say’s a lot!
Dave
Because of the constant bluescreen issues that is why i have uninstalled avast for now until a bug release is issued.
Your reply is nonsense.
Comodo firewall is NOT the cause.
Everything was running just fine until the latest version of avast was installed.
It is obvious avast were the culprit.
Avast is acting dumb here!!!
Every user should be in charge of their own machine no-one else, why can’t Avast keep a ‘known good stable version’ on line for anyone who is running older gear.
Avast need’s remember everyone is not using the latest software, the fastest CPU and the latest operating system, nor brand new machines, everyone has their own pet browser! - this is clearly Avast failing
Do we really must adapt to run Avast - I don’t think so, they need to cater for our wants if they want my subscription rather than dictate as Avast is doing, it’s my choice.
My choice is clear, get this fixed before my subscription runs out .
Damn it if I want a water tank I go to a plumber if I want Chrome I go to Google whats simpler?
Hi there Avast-users…I’ve had Free Avast, untill it expired, and I bought Internet Security for 1 year…BUT : I CAN’T get it to work!!!First coz of my Firewall, then I shut THAT down…But now, when I try to root Avast and open it from download,it say’s : The program has not the nessecery permission…
AND my laptop keeps telling me,my pc is in DANGER :o !!!WHAT CAN/SHOULD I DO??? >:( I run on Google Chrome and windows 8,and I HAVE REMOOVED the previous Antivirus (MacAffe),and I’m no wizard on a pc…I’m DESPARET,PLEASE GIVE ME THE GOLDEN ANSWER…
Have a brilliant day people,Regards from galaxyviewer :-[
