Instruction to restart Avast for no apparent reason

I use Avast Free 19.7.2388. Today my attention was drawn to the notifications and was presented with a restart button which I clicked and a restart followed. I assume that it is highly unlikely that Avast has been hijacked and nothing untoward seems to have followed.

This has occurred on all my Windows 10 Pro 64bit (feature update 1903) systems but not on my one remaining Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit system.

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?

By all accounts there has been a UI update (which would require a restart to become active) mentioned in another topic, see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=228911.msg1518237#msg1518237 this could be the reason.

Thanks for that information. The wording suggested urgency so I assumed a minor but urgent security update. All is working well now. I assume that there was little urgency and no need to interrupt what I was doing at the time.

This has happened to me over the last 3 weeks, once each week. Using the restart clears the issue although if I shut down and restart my laptop it doesn’t clear the notification.

I disable Fast Startup on all Windows 10 systems which I install. It makes little or no difference to the startup time and facilitates making CMOS/BIOS setup changes at power-up. Fast Startup is an irritating gimmick as far as I am concerned.

Changing it is easily accessed in Control Panel->Power options.

Thank you for the confirmation that the restart issue with Avast does not affect Windows 7.

Sorry to disagree but there is a difference in the time it takes to boot using Fast Startup.
I restart my system when I know there have been updates that require it. Any other time, I shut down the system.
Shutting down and restarting is a lot faster than the restart function.

Hi Bob. Thanks for taking the trouble to present your take on Fast Startup. Even though my Windows 10 hosting Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 laptop is pushing 13 years old, it doesn’t impact performance too much but the reason why I switch it off is because it causes the bypass of booting from CD/DVD. I use Acronis to backup on a weekly basis and this requires a boot CD.

I can confirm .
As far I’m concerned with Raizen7 CPU:
2 actions → Shutting down and restarting => 30s
1 action → Restarting => 42s
