insufficient memory to run the command (8) / Scan Message Error

Hi,

First off sorry for my English.

When trying to scan (right clicking on the file) “Thunderbird Setup 3.1.10”, Avast! Free show this message error at the end of the scan:

insufficient memory to run the command ( 8 ) → translated from Italian

Link to the file: hXXp://download.mozilla.org/?product=thunderbird-3.1.10&os=win&lang=it

Scan Settings:
Heuristic level: Max

No problem with other files scanning
No issues with OS / Other Software / Avast! (except this one)
No “High CPU” usage issues
No memory issues

Any idea/suggestion?

Thank you very much in advance,
T.

Tetsuo… Trying to reproduce the problem here…

Thanks, Tech.

Let me know if you need more info about my Avast! or system custom settings.
FYI - scan reports are set to include also minor errors.

Tetsuo, I’ve found another problem.
Maybe Igor should take a look on this also: there are messed the languages (English/Portuguese) in the interface!

“There isn’t enough space to process this command” is the error message for me.
The “Move to Chest” FAILED!

We have a situation here…

Well, it is a scan error, so you wont be able to move to chest anyway.

I see the same results. Not sure why.

Why? Aren’t they independent actions?

Okay, I’m not the only one with the scan error - Thanks for the info, guys.

Well, it is a scan error, so you wont be able to move to chest anyway.

Just curious, when you say you wont be able to move to chest do you mean that as for scan errors you simply cannot apply any action because the “Apply” button is always grey out no matter what action you choose?

avast is reporting an error in the scanning, not an infection so this option to move to chest (via the apply button) isn’t available. Since it is for file actions, usually used for infected items

Or do you mean manually adding it to the chest

You’re right, my fault.
But the mystery persists (and the interface/language bug also).

Adding to the info: Happens with a manual scan via the interface.

Seems, for me at least that it is just this file.

Not specific to one operating system it seems, I’m on Win 7 64.

Just tried scanning “Thunderbird Setup 3.1.10” English language version (instead of the Italian one): no error message.

Thunderbird Setup 3.1.10:

  • English language version for Windows: hXXp://download.mozilla.org/?product=thunderbird-3.1.10&os=win&lang=en-US
  • List of localized versions: hXXp://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/all.html

I downloaded the Italian language Thunderbird today from the FTP site using GetRight. On manual scan of the file, I also got the error. Yesterday, I had downloaded the US-English version and received no scanning error, as Tetsuo has noted.

I’ve uploaded the file to to VirusTotal, and none of the scanners errored on the file, nor was there any infections. The file had been previously uploaded yesterday, but I chose to rescan due to more recent definitions. VirusTotal does use the older Avast 4.8.1351.0 and Avast 5.0.677.0. It would be interesting if anyone reading this thread still has the old Avast 4.8.x, and would download and scan the file.

I scanned the file with SpyBot Search & Destroy, ClamWin, and MalwareBytes without errors.

Just a misdetection of an archive (avast! is trying to unpack an archive format that isn’t really there - which fails with the mentioned error).
I’ll try to silence the error (and fix the detection) somehow. In any case, nothing to worry about.

As for the description text, it’s supplied by the OS, not part of avast!.

That explains the “mixed” languages. Thanks Igor.

Thank you very much, Igor.

T.
