Insufficient system resources

About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I did a manual virus scan like I do every monday. My computer ended the scan with “Insufficient system resources”. I’ve been using Avast for a couple of years (completely satisfied customer here!) and never had this problem before.

I can scan any drive without a problem, except for drive C. I turned on the report generator, and amoung the bunch of “File was skipped because of scanner settings” and “is OK”, I eventually get “Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service” (44,414 files scanned at that point). What I find strange is that I get some more “is OK” after that.

For example:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\crashreporter.exe [+] is OK
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\crashreporter.ini [E] File was skipped because of scanner settings. (42016)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\autoconfig [E] Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (1450)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref [E] Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (1450)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile [E] Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (1450)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\dictionaries [E] Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (1450)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions [E] Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (1450)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe [E] File was skipped because of scanner settings. (42016)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\freebl3.chk [E] File was skipped because of scanner settings. (42016)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\freebl3.dll [+] is OK

Why would I have insufficient resources for a file, but not for another after?

Anyway, I need to reset my computer at that point. Ideas?

Windows XP SP3
Intel Q6600 (2.4 quad)
2Gb RAM

How much REAL free space do you have at that drive/partition?
Does the same problem excists if you run a boot time scan?

Just guessing, but could it be a windows registry limitation?

Maybe this helps.
