Intense disk activity with 2015.10.2.2214

Good question Peter…
::slight_smile: I reported numerous problems since the new program version came out. I usually get the same response. Do a clean reinstall. Been there, done that. They (Avast team) say this is the final version 2015.10.2.2215 that I just installed (cleaned out all the old avast stuff). However, my CPU is running at about 15-20% all the time when I am just sitting in front of my computer. Don’t even have to be doing anything. Why are the system processes using 80-100% of my memory all the time?
Someone earlier suggested disabling persistent cache by customizing the File Shield settings and unchecking it (turning it off). Oh how I wish this would have worked. NOT! :-\

What am I supposed to do if one of my fans go and my hard drive fries?? I will be extremely unhappy.

::slight_smile: I feel really stupid right now!! I just did some checking at other topics… which I should have done at first. I followed this topic and also Bob’s and disabled 3rd party software updater. I AM ELATED… it did the trick. Please excuse this impatient granny. And thanks carfal and Bob!

I also used Program and settings and Changed Avast and Removed the Program Updater Module. I don’t have an SSD drive but also saw a lot of HD usage.
After the requested restart, the HD usage was still between 90% - 98%. That excessive usage continued for 11 minutes and then drastically subsided.
The most active module at the time when there was a lot of HD activity was avast! Service (32 bit).

I have had the same thing happen after updating to the most recent version on 3/23/15. I have Windows indexing turned off. I tried uninstalling with the avast cleaner, and reinstalling. I tried deleting the lscache.dat file in safemode, turning off the automatic updates and nothing worked to stop the unwanted constant chattering on my hard drive.

My problem seems to be with the file system shield. When I turn it off, the chattering of the scanning stops. Needs a fix fast.

Thanks for the free product though. Other than this most recent problem, I have been happy with the product.

Thanks Bob for the additional information. My elation was short lived. I am going to remove the program updater module as well. Hopefully this will fix this issue.
I have used Avast for years; however this current build seems to be the most troublesome yet.
Bob your help is appreciated.

I have the same problem - Avast is writing about 10 - 15 MB per sec to lscache file. Writing is stopped when file shield is stopped. Reinstall, disabling cache - nothing help. It is on version 2015.10.2.2215.

I am intensely disappointed to discover after 3 weeks of having my SSD disk thrashed (>50Mb/s all day) and struggling to find a cause. To then find that Avast shields and cach is the culprit. Why is the Avast activity hidden in the Task Manager and Resources as a system activity. Turning of shields has stopped the activity. Far from paying anymore for this service I should be asking for damages to my hard drive.

I have lost all confidence in Avast.

I too am very weary of the CPU and memory usage of this current build. When I check my resource monitor it shows about 10+ avast connections running in the background; this isn’t counting the 9 or so that are running normally.
Honestly I would rather go back to previous version (before 3/3/15). At least I felt secure, and my system wasn’t being thrashed. I do like Avast, used it for over 8 years. I’ve recommended to friends, family and neighbors as the best. But…
What else can I do to alleviate some of the load from my CPU and memory? I have read so may articles, I’m just truly confused and frustrated :-
Please help…

I traced my excessive Disk usage to WmiPrvSE.exe
And as you can see, I’ve found a solution.

Open your Services program. The easiest way to find is just click Start, type Services, hit Enter.

Under Services (Local), scroll down until you find the “Windows Management Instrumentation” service and select Restart.

I have to respectfully disagree to this as a “solution”.

avast is misbehaving, not playing well, bugged, incompatible, whatever you want to call it, with windows. Do we fix windows or avast? Even if we fix windows, do we do this every boot? This is bug that avast simply need to fix.

I too ran into the same problem, the activity seemed to either stopped on its own, or stopped after I tried several things found from searching the forums…

@CATL,
I’ve applied this fix once and as you can see, it’s still working:

Well Bob, I know you are very helpful…however this did nothing. I did click restart on that yesterday. Rebooted my PC and the same issue. Massive amounts of CPU usage and my poor drive is taking a a whooping. Plus, when I go online it take 3 times as long for a page to load than it did before the most current version 2015.10.2. 2215.
I did some further checking and I question for you. When I open my task manager to processes, I click all users.
I am attaching a snip–maybe you can tell me why the differences in users for different Avast processes. I am still believing this is an Avast issue.
Hoping for help. Thanks Bob!

I think this has more to do with the type of system access required.
The UI requiring only user access.
I’m again reporting this to a Moderator in hopes of getting some sort of reply and input from Avast.

I’ve had the same issue and have had all shields disabled for a couple weeks now. I had just built this computer around the 2nd week of March and found that I had 10TB written to my 500gb SSD in a week. By the time I figured out what the problem was and disabled Avast, I’m at 30TB written in less than a month. My warranty is only good until 300TBW. I want to know what Avast is going to do to compensate us for the abuse of our hard drives. 10% of the life of my SSD is gone in less than a month. We should be able to rely on antivirus companies to keep our computers safe. But Avast has done more damage to my computer in a month than any virus has done to me in 20 years.

Bob
Has there been any time frame given by Avast team for the next SP that is supposedly going to fix this bug?
It’s been over a month already, and I refuse to boot my system until I am assured of a fix.
This bug is worse than any virus I’ve ever dealt with. ::slight_smile:
Thanks for helping out with this.

No word from Avast on the update release and so far no reply from Avast on this topic. :frowning:

Interesting, everyday there’s new topics with same issue, with different titles. Poor users. This is very frustrating.
Do you have any suggestions what I can do in the meantime. I need to use my desktop— my smartphone can only do so much.
Maybe I’ll check with bleeping computer

For me, the fix I’ve posted has done the trick but, I have an ide drive.

Have the same problem for a month now, first ssd corrupt (>60TB writes)
My new one 17TB in 2 weeks, so I contact avast and this is response:

I just have found out that this fix will be released in next program update within 2 weeks. It's caused during data are copied from USB to computer. You can disable File system shield if you want to copy data. That's workaround till fix will be released.

If I didn’t checked the smart data this second disk will be ‘dead’ in a couple of months.
It doesn’t seem there will be any compensation so…

Bye Avast >:(

Same problem with 2015.10.2.2215
The problem come from the clouds mirroring

lscache.dat stop growing and fragmenting
if parameter “scan when writing” is put off

or if i stop cloud mirroring

lscache.dat very big and fragmented
to use avast (windows 8.1) i have to stop “scan when writing”
