What is the Operating System and Firewall on this system ?

If you have windows defender activate you may face this issue sometimes

Even though i dont like or recommend defender but your statement is incorrect and iv never seen defender disable any internet connection, please let the OP respond to DavidR’s question first before responding with irrational answers.

hello thanks i have windows 7 Pro

And what firewall ?

IM uysing windows firewall but i did set it to allow avast svr and src

The win7 firewall has outbound protection disabled unless you enabled it ?

If you did enable it, it is rules based, you have to create the rules and it is not very user friendly. So there is always the possibility you got the rule incorrect and that could block the web shield and in inadvertently your internet connection for HTTP connections.

Just to add to what DavidR mentioned if you are also using the windows firewall in it default state then you do not have to add any avast exclusions to the windows firewall.

should I just turn it off since avast has a firewall anyways?

Only the avast internet security suite has a firewall, if you haven’t got that you need a firewall. The windows firewall is better than none, but this doesn’t resolve your initial problem with the web shield.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security based software do you have installed (anti-spyware, etc.) ?

Yes i had one but I turned it off its a program that has a firewall and antivirus - both are off just the windows firewall is on now

thats all i have installed

Uninstall the other AV that has a firewall. Use CCleaner to clean-up any leftovers. The other AV may still be causing conflicts even with it turned off.

For a free firewall that works well with avast try;
http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Online-Armor-Free.shtml
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Privatefirewall.shtml

If you are a novice I recommend using Private Firewall. Be sure to make the proper exclusions.

I believe you have found your problem, even when switched off resident antivirus and firewalls, will have low level drivers still running and it is these which come into conflict.

It needs to be completely uninstalled. You didn’t say what it is, but uninstall from Control Panel, Programs & Features.

Depending on which program it was you may need to use its removal tool to ensure no remnants are left. Also see http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.

I uninstalled my antivirusand web works now
the only problem is its SUPER slow my page takes almost a minute sometimes to load up, my mail doesnt work properly anymore either, it wont let me search emails and sometimes I get a screwed up page (no graphics)
anyone know if this is normal?
thanks for the help

It isn’t normal.

Did you just uninstall from the control panel, if so you may need to use the specific removal tool also.

i only had rogers antivirus ( which is jus t a basic antivrus i get free with my internet connection)
at
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/internet_security-features

so i dont have a special removal tool for this

Which includes more than just an antivirus:

Anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall Parental and privacy controls Basic protection for up to 3 PCs1

Undoubtedly it will be some sort of suite they use under license (with their own branding), so I don’t know what that might be.

The problems is in that basic protection it includes both a ‘firewall’ and a ‘parental and privacy control,’ which could be having an impact.

All I can suggest is seeing if their support pages/forum have any instructions on removal.

According to http://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.portal?Ntt=uninstall&N=&_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=support_results
Uninstalling Rogers is done through the Control Panel. ???

One of the reasons why I do not let anything from Rogers on my system! ::slight_smile:
