Interesting Software and System News

I doubt it will happen but even if it does, I’d be back up and running in the same state as now within a few hours with nothing lost. The only two times in 11 years that I have had to reformat were caused by me following “expert” advice about how I should tweak my system. Advice that resulted in disaster. I see no reason to backup anything but the My Documents folder.

Hi Dch48,

Maybe you have not thought about this, but technology has overtaken us now. Say that you work on a machine, that machine has leaking condensators and this has ruined the old Mobo beyond repair, wouldn’t you need your back-ups then?

Answer no, because you can have the hard-disk restored as a peripheral for a few bucks encased with its own USB plug and feed and hang it undo a new computer (have to re-own the data again with Vista or W7 but still have all your data), in the case of SafeHex and without a destructive virus infection then maybe you should not need back-ups, but I still have a back-up on a usb stick (8 GB is enough for incrementals),

Hi malware fighters,

New windows security admin tool EMET version 2: http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2010/07/28/announcing-the-upcoming-release-of-emet-v2.aspx

While EMET can be used by anybody, it is primarily targeted at protecting applications on machines that are at high risk for attack. Good examples include line of business applications on backend servers and browsers on the desktops of corporate executives. These are scenarios where an application compromise could be particularly damaging.

As with most software, deploying this tool will likely involve an individual, such as an IT professional

Obviously not designed for the average user.

Hi bob3160,

But useful for some here,

CheckDrive: Freeware to Scan and Fix Hard Drive Crash and Errors

CheckDrive offers you an easy way to check your hard drives for errors. CheckDrive may detect and fix hard drive errors that might appear on system crashes or when switching off your PC without a proper Windows shutdown. If you ever had a system crash then CheckDrive is for you.

CheckDrive offers you an easy way of checking your PCs hard drives for errors. Those errors can be fixed immediately if you like.

It also shows info about your drives and determines if your hard drive needs to be cleaned or defragmented.

Does it really do more than Chkdsk already does as far as fixing errors?

I would strongly advise to skip that sort of crap, and yes do stick to Chkdsk

I don’t think so. But I didn’t post that

Firefox 4 to include silent update system

Nice find.

sounds like Chrome ;D …but okay, that’s a good thing.

I read about this some time back but I guess, they need to install addons also silently

I am not sure

I for one wouldn’t mind the silent installs of updates, provided that they didn’t screw the program up.

When you bounce around between different machines at client offices, it’s a pain to go update the program, update the add-ons, update the themes, etc.

Sounds good to me.

I would much rather it was a notification of an update being available rather than an autonomous update. Or better still a choice of what option to have auto/notify the last thing I want is an autonomous update happening whilst you are busy.

that’s because you’re on dial-up, you don’t feel these updates on broadband. They’re minimal on Chrome for instance.

That is a major factor, but I hate anything forced on me, there are very few applications that I allow to auto update, avast being a notable exception (and even then it isn’t forced as you can change that if you wish).
