interminable scans

Using Avast free version 12 3 2280. Scan sits on 6% forever or at least it seems that way. Tried quick scan and had no better luck. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Thank you – after repairing, window came up that said Microsoft security essentials is also on my system. This was uninstalled many years ago. I went thru Microsoft help desk (in May or June of this year) to make sure and they said they removed it. It is not listed in my control panel programs so I can’t remove it myself. I know you cannot have 2 anti-virus on one system and want it off. Avast had been working since May or so – don’t know why all of a sudden it is not. Do you have any suggestions for getting mse off this pc. Thank you.

What operating system ???

Sorry - Win7

Are you sure it said “Security Essentials” or, did it say “Defender” ???

If it is Security Essentials, this should help:

Thanks. It is MSE as in Microsoft Security Essentials. Not Defender. I’ll give it a try. Thanks again

I had high hopes for this suggestion but strangely enough did not cure mse presence. I thought the cure would lie in the depths of regedit. but mse does not show up in any of the keys. I just don’t know why Avast repair thinks it is on the system. If it is not as far down as regedit, then it can’t be on my system, right? I think I will try the repair again and see if it still shows up. Thanks again for your help.

Scroll down to second picture and follow instructions for Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

attach the two diagnostic logs in your next reply here

I will give Farbar a try - if that doesn’t do it, I am going to have to uninstall Avast in install MSE. I need virus protection and I can’t do scans that need to be done periodically. I am assuming that Avast is still protecting my system in spite of what it says about MSE. True?

I will give Farbar a try - if that doesn't do it.............
Farbar will not do anything, it is a diagnostic tool

An expert have to review the logs

I understand that it doesn’t do anything but diagnose. Hope it comes up with a diagnosis that I can use to fix system in terms of virus processes.

have moved your logs from Virus and Worms forum section and attached here

Sorry for mis-post area. So we are are alll set now??

A log expert is notified, when he arrive he may see the problem in those logs

I need to see all the settings for auto-starting. To do that , the scan needs to be run by an Administrator of the system. If the FRST.txt file and the Addition.txt file are on the desktop, please delete them. Then login as PvN (this user has Administrator level access according to the logs you posted) and rerun the scan based on the steps below:

We need to get a fresh scan from FRST.

[*]If you still have the Addition.txt file on your desktop, please delete it now.
[*]Right click the FRST file on your desktop and select “Run as Administrator…” (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
[*]If an update is available, the program will inform you and download the update. Allow it do this please. Otherwise, just wait for the “The tool is ready to use.” message.
[*]Please check the Addition.txt in the Option Scan section of FRST.
[*]Press the Scan button.
[*]It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
[*]Please copy and paste log back here.
[*]The tool will generate will another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Just to let you know, I have Malwarebytes on laptop. Ran it on the 16th and it came up with zero malware. I am running the FRST scan now - new one as administrator as requested. I will post logs as requested when finished. Thanks very much.

Could not copy - here are attachments.
