Internet Browser Problems

I’m having a problem with the avast! Web Shield. My version is 4.6.691 if that helps.
The problem is that when I have my Web Shield on, I cannot access any website with my 56k connection unless I go through My Computer and type it in the address bar. Internet Explorer and Firefox isn’t working.
Fire fox gives me this message:
The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
      moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
      connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

And Internet Explorer gives you the typical “This page cannot be displayed” message.

I’m pretty sure the problem is with the Webshield, I’ve turned everything else on and off and nothing else seems to be affecting it. I’ve been able to receive my mail though outlook, but no websites work on my browsers. I’ve tried the Normal, High, and Custom settings, and fiddled with the settings, but nothing seems to work. The only thing that I can do is terminate the Webshield, which works, but I’d rather have it on if I can configure it to make my browsers still work.
Any help or suggestions is deeply appreciated.

P.S. I just read something about a proxy server in the help file, but it doesn’t seem to have worked.

  1. The latest version of avast and wen shield is 4.6.744.

  2. What is your OS - What is your firewall?

  3. Did you check the firewall access for ashWebSv.exe, you didn’t mention that?

By switching off web shield and browsing works does tend to indicate ashWebSv.exe is being blocked or the browser needs to be manually set to use the web shield proxy.

I’m actually in the process of getting the new one (Avast!), hopefully that will help my problem. I’m using Win XP Home SP2
My regular firewall was off, because I think I had my Norton one on, but I’m no longer sure. but I just added avast to my allowed list on my Windows firewall so I’ll see what happens.
I manually set a proxy up or whatever the help section told me - localhost at 12080, and that hastn’t worked. But I think adding avast to my allowed list has just fixed the problem. The part about that that’s confusing to my is that my firewall wasn’t initially on. O well, I think it’s working anyways.
Yup I just figured it out, I turned my Norton Firewall back on, and added the avast programs to the safe list, for some reason, one of the avast programs had been blocked.
Thanks for all your help.

No problem, welcome to the forums.

Hi
I have a similar problem. just installed avast having removed panda AV. I use a router & NAT. If webshield is on - I can open google (maybe from cache) & get list of sites on search - but cant open them - usual server not available message. This regardless of Win X SP2 fiewall on or off. I set localhost to 12080 & added avast antivirus & ashwebsv to exception list. Before I did that, it wouldnt even load google.
Any idaes please?
Thanks

Hi,

If webshield is paused/turned off, I suppose you can surf normally, correct?

That’s right - regardless of the win firewall being on or off.
and just to prove something - what I dont know - it works fine on a win ME machine (no win firewall) for m the native download.!
