Internet connection timeout elapsed

I’ve had Avast 4 home edition for awhile now and recently I’ve been getting a popup that says “Internet connection timeout elapsed Continue Waiting?”
Then I have the option of click ing yes or no. No matter which I click I get the popup again a few minutes later.
I have a DSL internet connection so Im always connected to the internet.
I havent changed any settings so why am I getting this now and what can I do to fix it?

Thankyou

Are you trying to send a ‘big’ email (large file attached)?
Maybe not… but are you receiving a big email?

Why don’t you set the timeout for avast (Internet Mail provider settings > Advanced tab) to 600 seconds and, simultaneously, set a bigger timeout into your email account settings (generally Advanced tab too).

Did you set Connections (Advanced) into avast settings to DSL (and not dial-up)?

Hi,

I am getting the same problem but only lately since I’ve installed avast.

When I get this messagebox a small icon is usually present in the system tray area of the taskbar, as shown in the attached image.

I would really appreciate any help you could offer.

Many thanks,

Martin.

P.S. I’m not sending any emails at the time this happens, nor to I send large emails at all… however the small icon displayed does appear to have an ‘email’ look about it. I have ran a spyware scan with two applications and my system is clean, and avast has reported no viruses… so I don’t think anything is trying to send emails from my system. Cheers again.

Do you automatically check for emails, because even if there is no email when the email server is checked the Internet Mail icon will be present. For me this is a fraction f a second if there is no mail, however if there is a problem connecting to the email server this icon will remain.

Do you have a firewall (which one) and if so can you check that it is allowing ashMaiSv.exe access to the internet, if it can’t gain access to the internet then you will get time-out messages from your email program as it hasn’t received any server response for xxx seconds (the time out delay).

I’ve been seeing this message for a while. I consistently answer it “No”, and wish that was the default. And I wish that it could be configured to remember and automatically supply that answer.

I’ve been seeing it ever since my web host started being intermittantly less responsive. (I’m in the process of switching web hosts, hopefully to a better one.) But the problem with the web host has been annoyingly exacerbated by these popups from Avast, which must be individually and continually responded to.

For me it, it seems that my email program’s background checking for email, together with the unresponsiveness of my web host, triggers most of the problems.

Under the Internet mail provider/customize/advanced you can set the timeout and tell it to close the connection instead of asking you by checking the other box. And select not to show the tray icon either.

Great. Thanks. It is a bit non-obvious that there should be program settings in so many different places. It would be nicer to have the all together in one large panel. But at least they are there, and I am very delighted to be told where to find this one. Thank you.
