Internet Connection Timeout elapsed

Hi I am not sure whether this is an Avast issue but thought this a good place to start.

I am using windows XP and Goldmine to manage my emails. I am connected to broadband. Goldmine is set to automatically retrieve my emails every 10 minutes. At least 15 times a day I get a pop up message from Avast saying
pop3btclick.com Internet connection timeout elapsed do you want to continue waiting?”

I click no and the message goes away and the small email retrieval icon at the bottom of the screen closes.

Does anyone know whether this is likely to be an Avast, a broadband or a Goldmine issue?
Thank you 4 any help

avast is likely to be scanning content (confirm this mail icon in system tray and avast icon rotating), whilst this is happening it is possible that it exceeds the email program timeout delay, extend the delay.

Hello,
my english is very bad but how the delay could be extended? because i’m the same problem to Neilt with the newsrover soft

I assuming that you are experiencing the timeout when you try to receive or send emails and the timeout doesn’t popup at any other time.

You don’t say what your email program is, so I will give an example for Outlook Express.

You can increase both your avast! timeout: Internet Mail provider > Customize > Advanced (tab) (see David’s screenshot) and your email account timeout (generally, right click the email account, choose properties and the Advanced tab of settings).

See pictures here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17460.msg148474#msg148474

Is Goldmine and Newsrover mailcheckers or spam kilers?
If so, maybe, you can exclude the processes from scanning by the avast! Mail scanner.
Do not do it if they are email (final) programs.
The solution is simple. You must exclude the process adding their names into the avast4.ini file (generally C:\Program files\Alwil Software\avast4\Data\avast4.ini) at the section [MailScanner]:

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=Goldmine.exe,Newsrover.exe

Multiple process names can be separated with commas.

tanks tech for your help, your example is good because my problem was on the newsrover software and it is finished (my problem) with your answer

10ney, don’t forget that your News won’t be scanned using this method unless you take the High sensitivity level of Standard Shield (which could take some resources of your computer in other hand…). Anyway, glad that helped

Hello Tech thanks for the suggestions. I have been away from my computer so have not seen the problem happen since posting the thread.

Goldmine is a contact management software and is my email client. It is pretty much identical to Outlook. Are you suggesting that the “hang up” is whilst Avast scans large inbound emails because if so I do not think that is the case.

My personal opinion is that the timeout has something to do with my broadband connection but everytime you ask BT for technical support they blame other software so I wanted to eliminate Avast before laying into BT.

When I am next at my desk I will keep a look out to see whether the avast icon is rotating when the problem happens.

So, do not change the avast4.ini files or you’ll be unprotected.
The solution (workaround) here will be, in my opinion:

  1. disable outbound scanning (less problematic than the inbound).
  2. increase the timeouts both into avast and Goldmine settings.

When you next see the connection timeout message perhaps you could give us the exact contents of the message. It would help to avoid incorrect diagnosis of the problem especially since Goldmine is not just a simple email client.

Are you using Goldmine for “syncing” any other functions such as “to do’s” or your calendar?

I tried to insert a screen shot but failed.

The message is a box with a header Avast: Connection timeout

The contents are
Internet connection timeout elapsed. Continue waiting?
[gmw6.exe->pop3.btclick.com:110]

Yes No

other answers I don’t scan outgoing emails and I don’t do any synchronisation with Goldmine

Well it would certainly appear that avast’s mail scanner is monitoring the Goldmine email side.

gmw6.exe is your GoldMine program trying to collect email, were there any emails with large attachments? During this scanning there is no activity between the email client and server so the timeout warning is displayed.

Is there anywhere that you can increase the timeout delay in Goldmine? - like the example I gave for Outlook Express in a previous post.

Check how to do it in this Bob’s post: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0

My emails are collected every 10 minutes. At the time of today’s error message no emails arrived and I have had none since, nor the error message.

Yes I can increase the time out delay, it is currently set at 60 seconds but what are you hoping that will achieve? I forgot to mention that the a in the tool bar is not rotating for some time before the message pops up.

I’m hoping that it will allow the email scanner time to complete what it is doing before a timeout would be displayed requiring your input.

I’ll increase the timeout to 2 minutes and see if that makes any difference. I am away most of this week so may not be able to report back until later in the week.

As I said at the start of this thread I am not sure this is an Avast issue. I have been using avast 4 several months and the issue has only arisen in the last few weeks but we will see.

NeilT,

on the face of it I would have to agree that this does not sound like it is an issue with the time taken to retrieve a large email attachment. However, we still do not know for sure what is happening.

It might prove useful to create (for a while) a more detailed avast! log of what is happening with your mail connections.

You can get the mailscanner to log your connections by editing the avast4.ini file (in Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA folder).

In the section headed:

[MailScanner]

add the line:

Log=20

and save the updated file.

The log will be in Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\ashmaisv.log

It may help to share the file with us but you should edit the file to ensure that any personally identifiable information is obscured if you choose to post it.

try to find message.zip or secure mail file.hta on your comp

if you can you’re infected
