Internet connections lost when avast updated to 5

Hello I am using Windows Xp and have used free avast for a long time. After the latest update to vast 5.0 I lost my wireless internet connection as well as all other internet connections and could not even create new ones as the option was not working as well, the Firewall also could not be opened.
Please fix the problem or let me know what to do, as I wish to revert back to Avast since I have been obliged to install another free antivirus for the time being.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Hi zdullull and welcome; WHich AV did you install for the time being.First, when you do revert back to Avast you will have to be very sure that all remnants from the AV you have installed now are removed,as any remnants could invariably cause installation problems with Avast. I recommend you use the venders uninstall/Clean up tool.
Also what firewall are you using?

In addition to the comments and questions asked by schmidthouse, you stated that you “upgraded” to version 5.0. Did you have AIS (Avast Internet Security) as your product since you did not reference what you had, and what version did you try to install?

Since users have had problems upgrading, I suggest an uninstall of your current AV and firewall (FW)…one at a time, using the vendor’s uninstaller tool, then reboot the machine in between. Then do a clean install of the current version of the Avast product you need…which we need to find out from you.

In addition, hopefully when you installed the other AV on your system, you used the Avast uninstaller tool and uninstalled both Avast free that you had on your system in the past as well as the other product (AIS?) you were using unsuccessfully. If not, I suggest you do this prior to installing the new version of Avast. Here is the Avast uninstaller Tool:

  1. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all Avast versions and products).
  2. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  3. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  4. If Step 3 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  5. Reboot.
  6. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  7. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.
  8. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know how this works for you. Thank you.

For the time being I installed free AVG and have Firewall with Windows XP SP1.I was using the avast free edition antivirus will all the shields activated. It was on automatic update for both the versions and the virus definitions. THe problem was from version 4. something to the latest version 5. that was released just a few days ago. After automatic updating it asked me yo reboot then the problem occured. Thank you for the link to remove older avast version. I tried uninstalling avast from ADD/Remove program which gave me avast uninstall window and install again the new version but I have the same problem. Should I try again with the link provided to uninstall avast?Thank you for your help in advance.

You should update XP to SP3 as soon as possible.

Windows Sp>1, I did not update because the pc is becoming too slow.
Thanks

Use CCleaner and then update all the way to SP3. This update shouldn’t slow down the machine and will be much more secure.
