Hello. I’m using avast! Free Antivirus 2016 and Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7.
After I had got the new version around a month ago, I get Internet Explorer 11 blocked after some time. It is then impossible to start it again, I need to reboot. Internet Explorer 11 works well when avast! Free Antivirus is disabled. I can’t find out the reason, either on Internet or on your forum, so thank you if you could help on that problem.
Sorry if sometimes, I have a shaky English, I’m French.
Hello. As I already said, I’m currently using Windows 7, all updated (Service Pack 1 indeed).
On that computer, I had no other antivirus than avast! Free Antivirus, this is the first time I get a problem with it.
The first time I saw the problem, I tried a system restore, which brought back the version 2015. I updated to the 2016 version, and the problem appeared again.
I didn’t try to repair anything else. I’m going to check that.
No, you didn’t said that, you only said Windows 7 and did not mention anything about the SP.
What exact version of avast are you talking about ?
Did you performed a repair of avast ?
Did you performed a clean installation of avast ?
Is any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
If there was, how exactly did you removed it ?
Can you make dumps of all running iexplore.exe processes if you see crash message. Or even if you cannot start IE again, there will be running iexplore.exe surely, can you dump it too and send it me (then you can kill it and start IE again without reboot).
I’m using avast! Free Antivirus 11.1.2245. I haven’t tried any repair of my antivirus, I’ll check that tomorrow. The first installation of avast! Free Antivirus was in 2012, and it was updated after, without being reinstalled : there was only the system restore I did a month ago.
Otherwise, I have ZoneAlarm 14.1.011.000 as a firewall (no antivirus, of course). This is the latest version of the software.
I don’t have any crash message when Internet Explorer stops. I could only see that it doesn’t answer anymore (it is indicated as well on the top of each window of the browser open). When I kill all iexplore.exe processes, if I try to restart Internet Explorer, it is immediatly frozen : a window opens and indicates “No answer”.
Other signs are :
Microsoft Outlook 2010 can’t receive new mails (I have an Outlook.com account and my company’s one)
Windows Sidebar is also frozen (but can be restarted with the Task Manager)
(I’m sorry, the forum do not allow too much big files. I used a French website to host them, for downloading, you just have to clic on Cliquez pour accéder au fichier)
The first one contains 3 dumps of all iexplore.exe processes, juste after its first crash.
The second one has 2 dumps of all iexplore.exe processes just after having tried to restart Internet Explorer (who crashed immediatly, then).
Disabling and removing are not the same thing.
Even when something is disabled the installed software can still cause conflicts and/or other software not to work (properly).
Hello. Well, you got it right, I uninstalled ZoneAlarm yesterday and since this morning, I have had avast! Free Antivirus activated, and no more problem with Internet Explorer at all.
I don’t know how to make a suggestion for studying that bug to the Avast Software team.
Anyway, thanks for your help. I consider that topic solved.
It’s a little hard for the Avast team to fix a problem that was caused by ZoneAlarm.
ZoneAlarm has never been very helpful even on their forum.
Glad your problem is finally fixed.
You can Modify your first post and change the title so it reads:
