Internet Mail Issue

Hi everyone, before I get to my question let me get my specs out of the way.

Operating System: Windows XP
Avast Version: 4.7 Home Edition
Internet Connection: High Speed Broadband
E-mail client: Mozilla Thunderbird
Other security software: Comodo Firewall Pro

I just started using the Mozilla Thunderbird email client once again recently, and I often receive text messages to my email. These text messages are completely safe but Avast thinks they are suspicious messages, so it prompts me with a message everytime asking if I want to continue or delete the message. I’m glad Avast is doing it’s job but this is sort of a hassle, I’ve had to pause my internet mail scan everytime I turn on my computer now to avoid this.

Is there any way I can bypass this somehow? Or add the sender of these messages to a safe list or something? I can’t seem to figure out how to do this.

Why does avast think they are suspicious, it gives a reason on detection ?

What is the sensitivity for the Internet Mail provider, Normal is the default ?

avast doesn’t have a function to exclude a specific email address from scanning, which I think would be opening a door into your system. If that users system gets infected then their address book is likely to be compromised also.

Hi David,

I checked it out and it says the reason for suspicion is the subject, and since they are text messages there is no subject. I’m hoping that I can do something about this because I receive text messages to my email everyday, and I have to pause the internet mail portion of Avast in order to bypass this.

As for the sensitivity for the mail provider what do you mean and how would I find out?

Left click the icon, click Details button.
Internet Mail provider at left and then Customize button.
Heuristic tab and Customize button again.
Uncheck the subject analysis.

When you follow Tech instructions to adjust the Heuristic settings, when you click the Internet Mail provider icon, you will see a slider with the Sensitivity on it.

I’ve forgotten the screenshot…

Hi Tech, thanks for your help.

I’m curious, which icon am I supposed to left click?

I tried left clicking the avast icon but I don’t see any details option, and I tried left clicking the suspicious message alert but nothing happens.

The ‘a’ blue icon on system tray.
Details button won’t be shown after you have clicked on it once.
Do you see the providers at left?

It lets me see the providers under either pause or stop provider.

I’m referring to this…
Click the Detail button and the ‘Less Detail’ button will appear.

Ok I’m there, and I followed the instructions.

When I get to the Heuristic Tab it only lets me click on customize if I move the slider to custom mode, I did that, but there is no subject analysis to uncheck, the only thing close is Subject Structure Check and that’s already unchecked.

Is this one… if it fails, probably, the heuristic caught another problem that should be reported in the suspicious warning.

What should I try then?

Perhaps lowering the sensitivity?

It shows that the Internet Mail sensitivity is under medium.

It work at custom with the Subject Structure Check option disabled.
Does this happen when you receive or when you sent emails?

It only happens when I receive text messages via email. I have to receive these everyday, and they are completely safe. So I just wish there was something I could do cause I hate to pause the provider all the time.

You don’t have to.
When you receive a virus warning (one of these that are boring you…), take a screenshot and post it here. See how to post a screenshot (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0).
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).

Problem is now solved, once I leave it in the custom mode with the subject structure unchecked like you said the alerts no longer appear with the text messages.

Thank you so much for your help, and thanks to David as well.

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)

No problem, glad we could help.
