Internet Mail Provider Not Working?

Hello all, I have windowsMe and I can’t seem to get the internet mail provider to come on. I did a search here and read about the mail protection wizard, but I am a Newbie at this and I can’t find how/where to run the wizard? Or do I even need to? I am using Verizon DSL with MSN to get my email (Basically Hotmail) Should I run the Wizard or is ok the way it is? My status shows 6 providers, 4 running…the 2 that are not running is the internet mail prov & Outlook provider.

Also, I have outlook express on my machine, how can I get the provider to watch outlook express incase i want to add another email account to OE? I am guessing the Wizard?? Thanks for any help in advance and please excuse my nOObness…I just want to take advantage of everything this great program has to offer!

Yes you need to run the wizard with WinME (or 98/85, etc.), you don’t need the Outlook/Exchange provider unless you are using MS Outlook (not OE). The internet Mail covers OE but you must run the wizard before this can be enabled.

This may differ slightly for ME.
Start button, All Programs, avast! Antivirus, Mail Protection Wizard.

Thanks, I will run the wizard tonight!

Have similar problem!
Total computer illiterate. Downloaded Avast home 4.6 last noght, and since have been unable to log into my mail provider, Tesco.net, via Internet explorer. Unlike you, I run Windows XP , so should not have to fiddle with my mail connections ( not that I’d know how).
Anyone any idea why the login page (www.tesco.net/webmail) simply won’t load, returning the standard page unavailable fault?

Thanks!!

This is not likely to be the same, rather your firewall blocking the ashMaiSv.exe which requires internet access.

You can confirm this by either temporarily disabling the Internet Mail provider or your firewall (this does carry a risk for the short time you disable it).

Well, it worked for verizon mail, but it wont let me receive msn mail? Is msn mail supported by avast? When I ran the wizard, it asked me to select my SMTP and POP3 servers from a drop down and verizon was the only choice? What should I do?

Does msn mail is a pop3/smtp mail? If not, avast! can only protect you with Standard Shield at High sensitivity.
There won’t be a specific mail provider to protect you.

What do you mean? You have verizon mail, it seems to be supported by avast as it is a pop3/smtp mail.
If you want msn mail to be scanned, well, my suggestion is above.

P.S. Does msn mail use SSL connection?

Let’s go through this one more time (how many times will we have to say this?).

rocketfoot appears to be a resident of the US. In the US there is (AFAIK) no POP3 or SMTP access to MSN. To all intents and purposes in the US MSN=Hotmail. So … if rocketfoot has a grandfathered account he may be permitted to used WebDav via OE otherwise he is, as we say, SOL.

There are a number of free third party programs that will allow Rocketfoot to access his MSN account via http and convert the http stream to POP3 that can be scanned by avast! (no matter what the status of his MSN account). FreePops and MrPostman come quickly to mind. HotPop is a shareware solution that will allow conversion from WebDav to POP3 and SMTP to WebDav with facility to allow scanning of POP3 and SMTP by avast! (if his account has grandfathered WebDav access).

If rocketfoot needs further assistance on any of these solutions he just needs to ask.

I use msn mail to receive all my mail including verizon, msn and gmail…I don’t want to change my setup, so I will just rely on msn’s email antivirus plus avast’s standard shield on full blast. That should keep me safe. I hope to get a new puter with XP Pro soon…

Thanks for the responses! You guys ROCK!

Hi David,

Thanks for the advice. Have out of date Norton 2002 - but have more or less switched it off (didn’t want to delete it until sure avast was working!). Also disabled windows firewall - made to difference - still won’t allow connection to the tesco webmail page. Not sure how to turn mail server off - as I say, totally useless with PCs (give me a BBC B - more my era!)

Any other ideas? Thanks!!

Get rid of Norton before installing, using and testing avast!
It won’t be possible to give you further help as this is a must have condition: remove NAV completely.

About the connection, well, into your firewall, avast! components should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)
