Internet Mail Provider Problems

Hello,

I have researched this problem here, and hope I can contribute to the understanding of this problem. Many people, myself included, are all of a sudden unable to retrieve our emails when the “Internet Mail” Provider is enabled. I have seen many mentions about running multiple AV programs resident and that could be contributing to the problem. Here is my system configuration.

Firewall: Windows XP w/SP2
Anti Virus: Avast v4.6.665
Email Client: Thunderbird v1.0.2
Secondary Email Client: MSN Explorer (the butterfly one) - latest install
Operating System: Win XP Pro w/SP2

I have no other AV (anti-virus) programs installed or running at all. When I open up Thunderbird, with Avast running Internet Mail Provider, it displays the current status at the bottom left of the window. It shows there that there is x of x emails being retrieved, but then never displays them. Same problem in MSN.

If I stop the Internet Mail Provider, all works just fine. Of course, it’s a simple matter to retrieve my email by stopping that specific provider each time, however, it’s annoying, especially considering this was never the case until v4.6.663 came along.

I have also ensured that my firewall will permit ashMaiSv.exe to run by adding it to the firewall exceptions for Windows Firewall. Still no luck in correcting the problem though without stopping the Internet Mail Provider.

I have also made sure that all ports are set to port 110 for email in both MSN and Thunderbird’s configurations.

I have also uninstalled/reinstalled Avast to no avail. Same problem still happens. All I know for sure is that I have narrowed the problem down to Avast.

So, what are the suggestions at this point, and please keep in mind that this did not occur until version 4.6.663. Any input is greatly appreciated, but please understand that you are dealing with somebody who doesn’t know much Avast’s inner-workings and need very clear directions to help resolve this issue.

Thank you all for your help and time regarding this annoyance with a great program!

Well, disabling the provider you’ll be unprotected

This is strange… Disabling the provider shouldn’t be a cure for the problem…
I bet on the firewall… If you disable Windows firewall but keep mail provider running, can you receive mail?

How are set your avast! services? Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Update… literally! I just got a new update today (probably yesterday for most of you) and the problem is now gone! Perhaps a small programming program. I hope the rest of you can be so lucky that are experiencing this problem. Program version is still 4.6.665 and virus compilation date is 5/27/05. Thanks for the input. It’s nice to know that a community exists of helpful people.
