Is there also anything I need to perform regarding the Internet Mail setting?
I take it this is for when and if you need to check web based email?
If so I have the same problem as I did for the web shield which has now been sorted.
I don’t appear to see anything scanned when I open an email on Microsoft Web Access, this I assumed would have shown up on the On access Internet Mail Last scanned & Last infected.
Have I got this Internet Email thing all wrong, please teach me…
Which is your ISP for emails? I mean, the server name.
No. Internet Mail providers is used by POP3/SMTP email programs like Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Thunderbird. Webmail, when using http (Internet) protocol, will be scanned by WebShield. But, generally, webmail uses https protocol, encrypted, not scanned by avast.
First of all … Do you read all of your email via the web browser or do you receive any of your mail in a mail client like Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird?
If you read all your mail on the Web browser then the Internet Mail provider will not scan your mail at all.
I can tell them what you’ve already told… that Internet Mail provider won’t scan, but for more than one reason:
a) the user just uses webmail;
b) the server requires SSL and avast can’t scan the email anyway without Stunnel (like GMail).
Just an exercise of teaching… sorry, don’t want to be a pain in this thread…
With Microsoft Outlook you should be using the avast plugin for Outlook/Exchange. This is the best way to ensure that all email received and sent through Outlook is scanned by avast.
When you are using Outlook with the avast Outlook/Exchange provider then the Internet Mail provider plays no role in scanning your email. However, it is still a good idea to run the Internet Mail provider at High sensitivity. This will use minimal resources on your system but will alert you should you have the misfortune to be infected by an email spambot that will use your system to spew spam emails to the Internet.
With the full protection of avast this is not a very likely problem but it demands very little resources of your system for the extra level of assurance.
Stop worrying … if it finds any problem it will let you know … with a pop-up (since I believe you turned off sounds you will miss the siren - enough to wake the dead - that accompanies it).
