Internet Mail Setting

Is there also anything I need to perform regarding the Internet Mail setting?

I take it this is for when and if you need to check web based email?

If so I have the same problem as I did for the web shield which has now been sorted.

I don’t appear to see anything scanned when I open an email on Microsoft Web Access, this I assumed would have shown up on the On access Internet Mail Last scanned & Last infected.

Have I got this Internet Email thing all wrong, please teach me…

Which is your ISP for emails? I mean, the server name.

No. Internet Mail providers is used by POP3/SMTP email programs like Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Thunderbird. Webmail, when using http (Internet) protocol, will be scanned by WebShield. But, generally, webmail uses https protocol, encrypted, not scanned by avast.

Where would I find this info?

First of all … Do you read all of your email via the web browser or do you receive any of your mail in a mail client like Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird?

If you read all your mail on the Web browser then the Internet Mail provider will not scan your mail at all.

yourname@server.com
I want to know the server name… Are you using GMail, for instance?

Tech, please help me understand … if the poster just accesses all email via a Web browser … this information will help how?

I can tell them what you’ve already told… that Internet Mail provider won’t scan, but for more than one reason:
a) the user just uses webmail;
b) the server requires SSL and avast can’t scan the email anyway without Stunnel (like GMail).

Just an exercise of teaching… sorry, don’t want to be a pain in this thread…

I understand … but that is why I asked nightshade to let us know if all email is read on the web or any kind of mail client is used.

We are just trying to get at the same point - thanks.

Let me explain,

The client I use for sending and receiving personal emails is Microsoft Outlook.

And sometimes I go into Microsoft Outlook Web Access on a secure server to look into my work email when I am on holiday.

The Outlook/Exchange seems to be working fine, which covers my personal email, it’s the Internet Mail that concerns me a little.

Do you require any other info?

With Microsoft Outlook you should be using the avast plugin for Outlook/Exchange. This is the best way to ensure that all email received and sent through Outlook is scanned by avast.

When you are using Outlook with the avast Outlook/Exchange provider then the Internet Mail provider plays no role in scanning your email. However, it is still a good idea to run the Internet Mail provider at High sensitivity. This will use minimal resources on your system but will alert you should you have the misfortune to be infected by an email spambot that will use your system to spew spam emails to the Internet.

With the full protection of avast this is not a very likely problem but it demands very little resources of your system for the extra level of assurance.

I do use the plug in and it works well.

But how do I know the Internet Email is protecting me?

Stop worrying … if it finds any problem it will let you know … with a pop-up (since I believe you turned off sounds you will miss the siren - enough to wake the dead - that accompanies it).

It was just curious as to why the Internet Email did not show any last scanned details, perhaps cause there was nothing to scan.

Scanned count and infected count both 0

Task Name - Resident Protection

less details gives me - Last Scanned C:\WINDOWS.…\urchin[1].js with a scanned count total.

Task Name - Resident Protection

Remember what I posted earlier.

If you are using Outlook with the Outlook/Exchange provider then the Internet Mail provider is playing no part in scanning your mail.

If the Internet Mail provider ever finds anything then it will indicate you have a spambot infection. You want it to show nothing scanned.

Ok, I will remember that.

Thank you.
