Hello,
I’m trying out the latest beta version of avast ( 4.6-599 ). And not to ask a stupid question or anything, but do I really need to have the internet mail service running ? I mainly just use web based e-mail services such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc. . While reading about the internet mail feature, I believe it’s mainly designed for services such as outlook express, pegasus mail etc., is that correct ? Also, I have the e-mail scanner activated on my computer, do i need this either ? I’m using windows xp home w/SP2 . I have sygate personal fire wall installed. I hope this makes some sense. Thanks :-*
If you need/want it is entirely up to you to decide. You said that you mainly use webbased email. So you do use pop/smtp mail also. I would say let the Internet Mail provider and/or the Outlook/Exchange provider (depending on what email client you use) as they are. They only get active if you really are using a email client to check the mail.
You don’t have to have it running, if you only use http: web based email that is viewed through your browser rather than through an email provider.
Web Shield should also give protection for all traffic using the http protocol and Standard Shield another level (final) of protection.
Hello all,
Thanks for the speedy responses, what was stated makes sense. Possibly, in the near fure I might try using pegasus mail. But untill then I really don’t see the need in having internet mail or outlook/exchange running. Possibly evin the e-mail scanning function.
