Internet meltdown threat: Conficker worm refuses to turn

The brightest minds in technology and government are finding it “almost impossible” to defeat the Conficker worm, which has infected more than 5 million computers and, experts say, could be used to knock down the internet in entire countries.

I’m surprised that news about Conficker took that long to get to Australia:

Apart from the day were we shouldn’t turn on our computers what has it been doing now?I’ve been Hiding in the Corner of the internet lately

No need to hide.As long as you have the latest update from Microsoft and have updated avast everyday, conficker can do no harm.

News about Conficker takes that long and longer to reach the general public.
SMH is a daily newspaper (local rag) for Sydneysiders. Everyone in Sydney gets at least a shot at reading this article so some chance of them seeing conficker as more than one day of the year.

I think Microsoft have done a good thing with their A, B, and C scenario, giving us something solid to refer to, and it can be presumed that perpetrators of malcode will continue to use and reuse routines they are familiar with and have found successful to propagate further strains and variants of same type malware, including Conficker types.

Security researchers have picked it apart, vendors have banded together to fight it, and most users have at least heard of it after it made the mainstream media for a possible April 1 activation that never happened – but the Conficker worm just won’t go away. Its bot count has remained steady at around 6 million machines since this summer. And no one really knows what its operators have in store for all of that firepower.
