Internet very slow with webshield activated on vista 32

I have noticed that avast webshield seriously slows down surfing. This is easily rectified by terminating webshield.

Is there a way to keep webshield on and maintain high internet speed?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe you should activate logging in WebShield:

  1. Edit \data\avast4.ini file
  2. Find the section [WebScanner]
  3. Add the line:
    EnableLogging=1
  4. Restart Web Shield in XP (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
  5. Browse (trying to access some webpages)

The log file are \data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.

Oh, please try the following:

  1. Open the file \data\avast4.ini, and add the following line to the [WebScanner] section:
    ModifyVistaSocketAutoTuning=0
  2. Save the changes, restart the computer and see if it makes any difference.

If that does not help, try:

  1. Run CMD prompt (as an administrator).
  2. Type:
    netsh interface tcp set global autotunninglevel=disabled
  3. Terminate and restart WebShield. Do you see any difference?

Thank you for your advice. I tried both options with little success. The difference in internet speed with webshield turned off is truly dramatic. Any other suggestions?

    I have tried all the solutions you suggested but nothing help. So how do I undo the third option? Thanks for your help.

I don’t feel comfortable to get further. Sorry, I was trying to help but I’m not an expert on network management.
I’ve copied the ‘solution’ from here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=29323.msg242221#msg242221
Hope Lukas (from Alwil team) drop some light for us.

What OS are you using?
Are you using ZoneAlarm firewall?

Thanks

Thanks for coming, Vlk.
Is this setting only related to ZA?
Could it help (speed it up) the connection?

Well, as has been discussed many times, the current version of ZoneAlarm has a bug in Vista that is causing 1 second delay for each new connection (if webshield is active). So, this will indeed (subjectively) slow down browsing a lot.

This is perfectly reproducible in our lab. We have tried to contact ZA many times. As usual, they never really acknowledged the problem (even though we clearly showed that the problem is not limited to the Web shield scenario) so no one really knows the ETA for a fix…

I’ve forgotten this. Thanks.
