Hello hope you can help
I removed Norton at the weekend as it had run out and installed Avast antivirus instead, since then I cant connect to the internet using my Tmbile web and walk stick, I have the web and walk home page up but when i click the connect button nothing happens. Could it be Avast blocking it?
Lady from t mobile said avast has taken my internet explorer off, how do i get it back?
Hope you can help
Norton can be a real pig to remove completely even after an uninstall, see ~~~ below.
What avast version are you using 4.8 (home/Pro) or 5.0 (free/Pro/avast Internet Security suite) ?
avast doesn’t block, it scans and alerts to infection, if you are using the home/free version, that doesn’t have a firewall, so the likelihood is that your firewall or conflict with another security application is blocking avast.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again. These instructions relate to the latest avast 5.0 version.
As a temporary measure you could stop the Web Shield as that is likely to be what either the firewall or Norton remnants would be blocking
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:

thankyou for your help, yes I have gone and removed every part of norton and its running ok now, also you mentioned firewall I dont know if i have one now after removing norton as that had everything.
I was told by a friend that is you have windows vista you dont need seperate firewall just avast and windows defender is that right or do i need seperate firewall?
any advice you can give me would be very greatfull
thankyou xxx
so your able to connect fine to the internet now?
yes, you need a firewall, you can turn on the windows vista firewall, (it has inbound protection but outbound is off by default, it needs to be set manually, which is a pain)
or you can get a free 3rd party firewall that has both inbound and outbound. I personally use pc tools firewall plus, but if you look at peoples signatures in here you can see what they are using.

@ maltesermum
Keep Windows Defender updated through its portal:
Latest definition version: 1.83.848.0
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx
Read the installation Instructions for your system.
@ Saty
How do you set Vista to have an outbound firewall protection? Not that I need it, but I like to learn and it might help others. Thanks.
@ SafeSurf
thats a really good question lol. I used the default vista firewall for a couple years and I couldnt figure out how to configure the outbound setup. A tried, and gave up a couple of times, figureing inbound was good enough, but the lack of outbound protection always nagged me. Obviously it was above my head. the online tutorials didnt really help me. From what ive read online lots of users have trouble setting it. I personally havnt ran into anybody using the vista firewall and had their outbound configured. Maybe others here can shed some light.
After I switched to PC tools firewall plus I ran into a helper program from Sphinx Software, called windows 7 and vista firewall control free. Its suppose to be a plug in and make setting things a whole lot easier. But I found it after the fact so I didnt bother going back to the vista firewall to try and set it.
Its a shame microsoft made this so difficult.
sorry I couldnt give you any helpful answers.
