Introducing avast! for Linux Workstations BETA

Hi all,

I’m glad to announce the public availability of avast! for Linux Workstations (which will likely be FREE for home users, just as avast! Home Edition is in the case of Windows). :slight_smile:

Please feel free to test it and give us your comments.
Please note that the package does not include an on-access scanner as we somehow felt like it’s not really unnecessary for a linux workstation (hopefully this situation will not change anytime soon).

The program will want a license key - you can use an avast! Home Edition key (if you don’t have one, it can be obtained here: http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG ).

running sweet on my linux box (Mandrake 10.1) with KDE.

Intalled as root and runs sweet under “user” also…made a short cut to it (avastgui) in the “start menu”…just have to click it, and my favorite AV is there ! Updater works also.

just wondering though…does it support some special linux compression formats or just the standard windows ones ?

Also, as i believe (could be wrong) that if you want to scan your “entire system”, you need to run as root ? or not ?

i can’t imagin Avast reading root’s files when running as a user ?

I agree with not needing a on-acces for linux…if you atleast run your system as a user and not root.

Most of all Windows ones, i.e. including RPM, GZ, TAR/TGZ, CPIO, BZip2 (mainly for unix users).

Hi all,
I am very glad there is a nice graphical virus program for linux now. I am trying to not use microsoft at home. I use Linux Mandrake 10.2. After installing the softare by clicking it in konqueror, I was kind of surprised. Nothing hapened. There is no icon installed in the menutree. But luckilly the man page is installed nicely and it is found even when you do not know the exact location.

I do think an on access detection would be nice, since I communicate a lot with others whoi are using Windows. I could easilly infect them. This of course is their responability, they should use virus software also. But I would like to not send viruses around. And I do not check all my messages with avast first, before forwarding.

I did find some problems also:

  • Some cache files seemed to be too big for scanning. Ok, not a big problem, But what if they were really big doc-files?
  • a mail message on my imap server (I use one PC as mailserever, running mandrake 9) is supposed to have a virus. But putting it in the chest was not possible. I think because the program does not have sufficient rights on the server (I was scanning from the client PC).

Is there a plan for integration with evolution or thunderbird?

It runs perfectly on my Fedora Core 3 setup. I downloaded the RPM file and double-clicked on it. It installed itself with no hassles.

I am going to try it because I loved Avast Home Edition… There is one software I would never change and that is Avast :slight_smile:

It sounds great, and I will give it a try on my SUSE 9.2 Professional on my laptop.

I really love LINUX, and I don’t like/want viruses.

Hi:

I have been using dual WinXP + Debain lately, with Avast Home on my WinXP Partition. Happy with Avast Home on WinXP. Is Linux Avast really necessary? I know there are Anti-Virus software for Linux. Most importantly I need a Proxomitron Clone to strip HTTP-Headers, and content filtering for my web-browsing. I am sure Avast Linux is just as good as WinXP, but is it really needed for Linux?

Hope that avast! Linux get a GUI interface… Even F-Prot for Linux has one… :-

I am currently downloading Fedora core 4 - 64bit, once i get it up and running (hopefully I will ;D) i will try Avast.

Although it took me a while to work out which folder the shortcut was in, Accessories :slight_smile:

I would like to have the ability to right click on files/folders and choose scan like in windows.

It doesnt scan incoming and outbound email.

Perhaps this would be implemented in a future release, i would certainly like it.

Hi -

I just downloaded and installed the beta referenced in this thread. Unfortunately, it won’t seem to accept my registration key.

I copied-and-pasted straight out of the email - but the OK button remains disabled.

I’m running Fedora Core 3 …
