I don’t know if this an open project… Alwil will have to say something.
But, I’m here a lot of time and they never asked me to translate avast for Linux yet ::slight_smile:

I don’t know why but for some reason I feel anxious that Avast! is so slow on this forum. Avast is one of the leaders in multi language platforms and Linux is basically ,after everything is said and done, a European invention. There just doesn’t seem to be much push for Avast for Linux Workstations. I’m not being critical. It is just the way things are. It has to be something to do with allocating resources where they are needed the most. I’m in no rush. But for my entire history on this message board the Linux forum has always been a very lonely place. Techie is the only other Windows user that I see posting here. I think I will post a screen shot of the Avast GTK GUI just for kicks!

I will love it. I never saw the Linux interface. I have Linux as a second boot option but the translated version of mine does not install rpm or deb files that easy. So, to use avast I need to learn more about Linux and how to install and use it.
Does avast give on access protection or it is just an on demand scanner?

Tech

I posted a screenshot in a new thread.

Also, when you have time, you may want to look into the Suse Linux distribution. It has a very nice GUI interface and comes in several different languages and supports RPM installations, which is about the only way I can get anything installed without much trouble and know-how. I installed the Open Source version of Suse which has everything as open source software. The other Suse distribution is the one that includes everything like Java, RealPlayer, Adobe Reader, and so forth. I ended up having to install those packages anyway. But the Open Source version is fine for those that are purists at heart. My wireless card isn’t supported by Linux so I had to install “Ndiswrapper” to get it to work. But for the most part I truly enjoy using Linux. There just isn’t much in the way of security issues with Linux at home. I keep Windows installed on my best machine. It’s my old machine that now runs under Linux.

I’ve saw. Thanks.

I can’t find a freeware (open source) + Portuguese (Brazil) version of it.

Can you give me a link for it?
Thanks.

Tech,

ftp://ftp.linuxcenter.ru/iso/SuSE_10.0_GM_Final/
But mirror is in the Russia…

Do anybody know are there deb pkg of Linux for Linux Workstations?

I found my version of SUSE and I’ll try…
I have already backuped my two Linux partitions and let’s go 8)

Techie

Techie you choose your language at the time of installation. There isn’t a different package for each language. They are all bundled together.

I use KDE interface rather than Gnome. It will ask you that during the install.

Guys i wish i could test avast for linux but i can’t…Why you ask? When i enter my registration key i cannot click OK(just cancel)! The ok button stays greyed out.And yes i tried it like a million times already , i copy pasted it directly from email i tried entering it manually(i tried in user mode and as a root) and NOTHING.The OK button stays greyed out.Any thoughts?

What linux distro are you using. which avast package did you install from link above; tar or rpm?

You should be intalling vers 1.0.1

Hi Culpeper!I’m using Mandriva LE 2005 fully updated(it’s a locally modified distro so it’s in my native language) and i installed the .rpm packages(ver. 1.0.1) and everything seems to be fine it’s just i cannot click OK(that’s V REDU in my language) when i enter my reg key. It’s a really weird problem and i had a similar one with Skype(my IM program) when i entered my username and pass i also couldn’t click OK but after a few restarts the problem went away and i could click OK.I’ll post a screenshot when i’m in linux(i’m setting up Flock currently in windows  )

Thanks

Mikey

EDIT: I just saw your reply to Tech in that screenshot thread…I think i installed the older version so i’ll try again and let you know…

Anyways i managed to get it working…Yeepee!!! ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Culpeper for your help!

Yeah, I discovered this. 5 CD. The Internet installation did not work for me (1 CD + connection to ftp server).
Never mind. I’m finishing the download of 3 CD and let’s try 8)

You’re welcome Revan! I don’t know of a deb package for Avast.

Techie:

The above link will save you some time installing browser plug-ins. Also, in Suse be sure and check the “Online Update” occassionally. Other than that, after you get Suse installed it is solid as a brick. There is also a couple of Suse forums. Just do a google search for “Suse Linux Forums”.

Also, the Yast2 modules are your friends. It is part of the Control Center.

As for email. I use the KDE Kmail. It supports AV scanning.

Can Avast use proxy to update?

In Windows version it could.
I never tested into Linux but I did not remember to find a way to configure it through avast GUI.
Hope that you get a better help than mine.

Hello,

we haven’t heard lately anything new about avast for Linux Workstation.
Can we please get an update of what’s going on?
Is there a new beta to try out? Will there be a gui version?

We are very interested in the Linux version, so any news are very welcome!

Regards,

Sascha

The GUI beta version is out. Link can be found on page 3 of this thread. It is still a work in process though.

There are two things in the avast! engine to solve and it can be released

Will have any changes in the licensing process? I mean, will it be released for free to Home users? ::slight_smile:
