* Introducing * - beta version of upcoming avast update (4.7.932)

When will be launched the version 4.8? It has some date?
Version 4.7.925 is very steady.
It forgives me the repetition.
A suggestion: I know that already I suggested some times, but would be good if the Internet protection was faster in the sweepings, therefore the times the opening of pages are slow when the protection is active.
Congratulations for all.
Thanks.

JOOOOO is it too early to know when 4.8 will be released. About WebShield you will notice a little slowdown if you have a dial up connection

It’s correct.
Thanks.

I’m on dial-up and I see no noticeable slowdown when using web shield.

Testing the new version 4.7 (932).
Thanks.

Just installed .932 here, the update run without problems, and the version seems stable. Will play with it more tomorrow.

There’s a all packers in web shield?? Is this new in the beta?

Where? In the Pro version?

Congratulations to the developers for the effort to turn Avast (even :D) lighter on resources and speed, I think this objective should be an obsession for all software engineers, specially for the Windows Vista ones :P.

But why not put the download link in the Download/Beta software session in the Avast site? There, currently there is a message saying “(sorry, there are no beta programs at this time)”. I looked for the beta at the forum first, but, for who visits the site…

That was my question…where?? ???

I don’t remember if it was not there before…
Anyway, some archive types are new 8)

Ok Thanks. I was looking at the on access page, didn’t see it , so thought maybe something new.

It’s always been in resident tasks. Thought home had it also.

Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance

Don’t worry about it … I am fairly sure DavidR will understand

What changes this time and what to test? ;D (925>932)

I am testing version 932, no problems.
It is estable.

I installed the previous beta (925) and now this one (932) and, on my pc anyway, the memory usage is higher than with the last official release. The usage for the official release was:

ashDisp.exe - 2720
ashMai.exe - 1628
ashServ.exe - 6500
ashWebSv.exe - 15624
ashUpdSv.exe - 208
TOTAL…26680

My usage with 925 was:

ashDisp.exe - 1716
ashMai.exe - 2608
ashServ.exe - 12840
ashWebSv.exe - 17964
ashUpdSv.exe - 252
TOTAL…35380

After 15 minutes with 932 utilization is:

ashDisp.exe - 4604
ashMai.exe - 2280
ashServ.exe - 14180
ashWebSv.exe - 5912
ashUpdSv.exe - 228
TOTAL…27204

It is looking better right now but still not as good as the last official release. I’ll leave it running overnight and check again tomorrow.

I’d put it this way - because of internal changes, the real memory usage is significantly lower than in the previous official release (I can really assure you of that).
The numbers you see in Task Manager have little connection to reality (i.e. they don’t reflect the real memory usage and there’s no point in comparing them).

Excellent, flies on my Core2Duo under XP64.

For correct memory usage you have to enable VM Size column in Processes list (Task Manager).
Open Task manager, select Processes tab, click View and select Select Columns… in dropdown menu.
New column will appear next to the Memory usage one. Now check the VM Size column and tell us again how much is it using.
Vlk mentioned this some time ago in (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=6494.msg50215#msg50215) to explain the diference in memory usage and VM size.
In most cases, both values are very different.
