I’m glad to announce the general availability of a new avast program update, version number 5.1.889.
Compared to the previous version, the most notable improvements are:
solved a compatibility problem with CorelDraw X5
solved a compatibility problem with Acer control software
solved a problem inserting a license file via the installation wizard
solved a compatibility problem with some Dell wireless network adapter drivers
solved a compatibility problem with Game Guard (used by a number of games)
solved a compatibility problem with Sibelius
solved various 0xC0000005 and 0xC000007B errors (e.g. with some .NET applications)
issues related to upgrades from v5.0 (inactive shields, missing right-click associations, missing 64-bit boot-time scanner etc)
solved some possible deadlock conditions (relatively rare but possible)
performance related improvements
various UI related improvements
As usual, I’d also like to take this opportunity and thank all our beta-testers.
BTW it takes up to a few days for download.com (and other local download servers) to update their bits. If you want to download the full installer now, use the following direct links:

I must say that this is actually visible compared to the previous build on my machine. Great release. Keep up the good work and thank you(avast and beta testers).
I got 2 BSOD while on .864, and 1 BSOD on .884, currently updating to .889 and hoping for something good… I don’t know if my BSODs are AVAST related but I noticed all my recent BSODs happened when it updated to .864 last 1/1/11.
Same here attempting GUI update from 5.1.884 PR. Probably some of the servers aren’t updated yet, or are overloaded.
Edit below:
I tried several times for about an hour. Finally, I downloaded the 5.1.889 installer from http://download833.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe and did an overinstall in a Administrator account. I now have Avast Free 5.1.889 installed, all shields are working(except Mail Shield which I’ve disabled some while ago). Did a Quick Scan, and then a Boot Scan.
Before all this, the definitions updated to 110113-0. Now with 5.1.889, I get the same “Last encountered error: The system cannot find the file specified.” when I manually check for VPS updates.
I’m wondering if some of the Avast servers are misconfigured.
