Long time Avast user. I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I saw Avast was automatically deleted after I did that. I thought nothing of it so I redownloaded and installed it. I then started to have intermittent crashes for no reason. It would just freeze up and reboot. I thought it may have been a PSU issue, but the PSU is a high quality PSU and relatively new and the crashes only happened after I went to 8.1. Then I stumbled upon the situation regarding Avast potentially causing crashes.
Is there any ETA on when it will be fully compatible with 8.1? I uninstalled it totally for now to see if that will help. I feel so naked without it:)
There are always some reports from that many users but avast! 2014 (currently 9.0.2007) is fully compatible with Windows 8.1 with no major issue I am aware of. There are only some issues during update to Windows 8.1 which should be resolved shortly.

(Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
Uninstall avast! from Control Panel (if possible) and reboot.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in and follow the instructions. Reboot Windows in Safe Mode, uninstall avast! and then reboot in Normal Mode again.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Register your free copy or add the license key for the paid versions. Boot.
Check and post the results.
Please, be patient, boot when it’s said to boot…
Latest 9.0.2008 version seems to have addressed some issues.
