I am looking for a free anti virus program for my win 98 desktop computer. I wish to know if AVAST is compatible with SP Service Pack 2. I have not yet installed Service Pack 2 in the 98 machine. Thanks, Suziar

You can’t install XP SP2 on a win98 machine, unless you are talking of upgrading win98 to WinXP.
avast! is compatible with, win98, win98 SE, and WinXP sp1 or sp2.

Avast is very stable with Windows 98. I have not installed WinSP2 and have no intention of doing so.
I have installed 3rd party vendor protections in the way of firewalls, antivirus, script blockers, popup and ad blockers, process guards and such…instead of SP2.
Some users feel more dependent on Microsoft than I do.
The main thing is to cover all the bases in system protection.
But, Avast will work with SP2 just dandy.
