hello, i am new user of Avast internet security 8)

default settings is good enough or no? if no, what i need to change for best protection?do i need to have some other programs and which?

tnx

Sure, its good enough. If you want to adjust any setting, just wait. Give Avast! a little time on your system. How much? Depends on how much you use the pc per day/week. But generally, get used to the default settings. That way if you adjust a setting, and in short order something goes awry, you know the changed setting is most likely the culprit.

Now, once you get used to defaults, there are setting that are relatively safe to change (i.e. turning up heuristics on the Web Shield), and others that can really lead to trouble (like “scan all files” on the File System Shield). Any question about any specific settings change, feel free to ask.

edit: Good second opinion scanners that wont conflict with Avast!

default settings is good enough or no?
yes...thats why they are default ;)
do i need to have some other programs and which?
recomended secondary scanner www.malwarebytes.org

i use MBM, and aftee scan i couldnt login in windows, because MBM deleted win serial number.i also made mistake because i am beginer with programs :(. but i will again install MBM. How to know or learn which files cant delete?

Since you offered

Is having my Web Shield heuristics set to normal ok? I have not changed any of the heuristics in avast! free.

I have, however, gone through all the settings to make sure “Scan for PUPs” is ticked and that the default “Actions” for PUP and Suspicious is: Ask > Repair > Move To Chest (although for Web Shield it is just “Ask”). For Virus though its: Repair > Move To Chest > Delete (with Web Shield set to “Abort connection”).

Is this ok or am I leaving myself open?

MBAM false positives are pretty rare…but hey, if you feel uncomfortable using it again, there is always the other program I mentioned.

Anyway, your experience is the best argument for quarantining vs. deleting. Basically put, quarantine carries all the same benefits of delete, without any possible permanent damage. And while it is quarantined, you are free to look up what the file is to see if it is important. Of course, if it is really important, you will know in short order, when your system crashes ;D But then just boot into safe mode, and you can restore whatever you moved quarantined to get operational again.

Reason I mention the Web Shield is it only effects web content. So turning it up wont effect your system files, where the worst damage from false positives can occur. Most negative it would do (if at all) is slow browsing down or generate FPs on web pages. But do you need to turn it up, no, not at all.

Scan for PUPs is fine, as long as you know what PUP means, and how to handle that type of detection when it happens.

i have 2 firewalls, one is win 7 firewall and second is Avast I.S firewall. do i need to tirn off win7 firewall or no?
tnx

The AIS firewall should work just fine with the win7 one enabled, in its initial design it was tested to be compatible.

are you using a crack win serial key ?

yes

If you are using a Windows cracked version then please read this:
Microsoft to crack down on Windows 7 activation cracks
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9155738/Microsoft_to_crack_down_on_Windows_7_activation_cracks

i used cracked version of win xp home. now using win 7 ultimate

users of cracked software get no support in the forum

If you need windows - you are much better off purchasing it.

Its a LOT less hassle and you get support to go along with it.

Considering that there is a lot of Freeware out there (enough that you really don’t have to purchase any other software beyond your OS these days …well …maybe Office as I’m not sure how good Open Office is in terms of compatibility) its worth the few $$$'s for a legit OS.

I know that in Australia if you do happen to be a student you can get discount prices on some Microsoft products though. Like really good prices. Worth looking into.

You do always have the option of installing a flavour of Linux however that could require a bit of learning.

<<Basically put, quarantine carries all the same benefits of delete, without any possible permanent damage.>>

Just want to affirm what you’re saying here. Quarantine works best for me. I have some old compressed DOS apps that Avast occasionally wants to get rid of and pulling them out of quarantine and then giving them exclusion works for me.
